3294269552705929216limeytx2017-05-03T15:32:02.6460000-05:00I doubt John will join discord. He barely uses talk
4194641296529424386canibalcrab2017-05-03T15:36:22.1720000-05:00Or hangouts
5194641296529424386canibalcrab2017-05-03T15:37:08.8370000-05:00Maybe he can get someone who's more active to hop on as a liaison for blacksmithing
6294269552705929216limeytx2017-05-03T15:38:42.9910000-05:00Sarah, or best chance might be Mitch McDaniel, his sub chair
7300157480414085131.ladyl2017-05-03T15:46:04.1470000-05:00Mitch M would be your best bet. He's the vice chair, and who usually the one who responds to things on TALK.

Is there like a class I have to take? And what would be some beginners projects you guys can recommend?

42403764287975325697brsims24062019-08-10T15:55:08.4580000-05:00I don't know of anywhere local (though I'm sure there is someplace). I read over in general chatter that you don't like Amazon, so I'd suggest either Midwest knifemakers supply or Texas knifemakers supply. Both have pretty good online stores.

49194641296529424386canibalcrab2020-01-13T15:01:07.8380000-06:00Generally you'd want two of them minimum about 2 inches apart

52194641296529424386canibalcrab2020-01-13T15:06:31.1780000-06:00Locally, you can get them at woodworld with some other knife making supplies, but a bit expensive. You can also find brass pins for knife making on Amazon
53606137684272087081dgorilla0160692020-01-13T15:08:08.0450000-06:00Oh that is a great idea
54194641296529424386canibalcrab2020-01-13T15:10:01.1910000-06:00You can get some cool mosaic tile ones online too. If you join knife making groups on Facebook lots of people make and trade supplies like custom pins

75207721887067799562aesthetys2020-07-31T18:48:39.4990000-05:00No problem, I solved it. I just barely made it to Texas Farrier Supply in Kennendale and found a used $275, 65-lb Texan. My first anvil! Also picked up a hammer and tongs while I was there, so Im officially ready to start learning! James is a wonderful guy and he chatted with me for a while about the craft and the North Texas blacksmithing community. He was very knowledgeable and welcoming and he got me set up and good to go.👍 (1)

97388213344236077056doug.emes2020-08-01T21:32:48.9060000-05:00coal is old school, and "turning it off" isnt really a thing
98388213344236077056doug.emes2020-08-01T21:32:57.3970000-05:00for that reason alone, go propane
99207721887067799562aesthetys2020-08-01T22:28:02.2560000-05:00Okay, I might be able to afford that in a few months or so. In the meantime, I return to my original question: with mad enough campfire skills, the right kind of wood, and maybe some charcoal, is it possible to bring steel to temperature in a campfire or bonfire?
100194641296529424386canibalcrab2020-08-01T22:28:47.1740000-05:00I doubt it based on how I've seen coal forges work, but maybe?

103207721887067799562aesthetys2020-08-01T22:30:45.1890000-05:00There are wood-fired forges on the market, so the answer may be yes.
104388213344236077056doug.emes2020-08-01T22:32:45.1210000-05:00you have to have forced air... yes you can do it... but dont let your enthusiasm be a recipe for disaster. for every successfull flame tornado video on youtube, theres so many more serious 3rd degree burn victims
105547106163842613259nullinterface2020-08-01T23:05:02.0420000-05:00wonder if there have been adaptations of pellet stoves for such applications

107547106163842613259nullinterface2020-08-01T23:20:22.3710000-05:00just seems like a possible alternative to coal and propane

As Doug said, your gonna need forced air and as I said just above this, forced air and forging temperatures are gonna go through wood very quickly- requiring a lot of fuel.
109403764287975325697brsims24062020-08-01T23:22:50.9630000-05:00@ESmith the problem is maintaining temp, and coal is cheap.
110547106163842613259nullinterface2020-08-01T23:23:37.2430000-05:00more energy dense than wood, even pellets, for sure
111488485682184978442yashsedai2020-08-01T23:55:17.2880000-05:00if you have a good source of wood scraps wood makes sense, otherwise, coal is ok if you have a place to store it, otherwise, propane may be your best option
112488485682184978442yashsedai2020-08-01T23:55:30.1090000-05:00if you are just starting, coal will force you to learn fire control
113488485682184978442yashsedai2020-08-01T23:55:58.4290000-05:00propane is consistent usually
114547106163842613259nullinterface2020-08-01T23:56:33.2630000-05:00given that ~20lb of pellets can heat an entire house for several hours I'm a bit surprised that no one has adapted them for forge usage, however there might be issues with their burn temperature vs coal
115207721887067799562aesthetys2020-08-02T00:19:41.9410000-05:00Well, some research tells me about a wood called Osage-Orange, which produces 32.9 million BTU's per cord. Place in Kansas sells a truckload for a hundred bucks.
116207721887067799562aesthetys2020-08-02T00:20:21.9650000-05:00Apparently the hottest-burning firewood in the US.
117207721887067799562aesthetys2020-08-02T00:27:40.7270000-05:00I don't think I have anywhere near my house I can build a fire, though, come to think of it, and it would probably melt anything I put it in. 118207721887067799562aesthetys2020-08-02T00:28:37.5660000-05:00Speaking of which, I noticed there are no certification classes on the schedule. Is it by appointment for now?

143306262594434629632engpin19642020-11-25T13:17:46.5750000-06:00TOOLS EXPLAINED DRILL PRESS : A tall upright machine useful for suddenly snatching flat metal bar stock out of your hands so that it smacks you in the chest and flings your beer across the room, denting the freshly-painted project which you had carefully set in the corner where nothing could get to it. WIRE WHEEL : Cleans paint off bolts and then throws them somewhere under the workbench with the speed of light. Also removes fingerprints and hard-earned calluses from fingers in about the time it takes you to say, 'Oh sh*t' DROP SAW : A portable cutting tool used to make studs too short. PLIERS : Used to round off bolt heads. Sometimes used in the creation of blood-blisters. BELT SANDER : An electric sanding tool commonly used to convert minor touch-up jobs into major refinishing jobs. HACKSAW : One of a family of cutting tools built on the Ouija board principle... It transforms human energy into a crooked, unpredictable motion, and the more you attempt to influence its course, the more dismal your future becomes. VISE-GRIPS : Generally used after pliers to completely round off bolt heads. If nothing else is available, they can also be used to transfer intense welding heat to the palm of your hand. OXYACETYLENE TORCH : Used almost entirely for lighting on fire various flammable objects in your shop. Also handy for igniting the grease inside the wheel hub out of which you want to remove a bearing race.. TABLE SAW : A large stationary power tool commonly used to launch wood projectiles for testing wall integrity. HYDRAULIC FLOOR JACK : Used for lowering an automobile to the ground after you have installed your new brake shoes, trapping the jack handle firmly under the bumper. BAND SAW : A large stationary power saw primarily used by most shops to cut good aluminum sheet into smaller pieces that more easily fit into the trash can after you cut on the inside of the line instead of the outside edge.
144306262594434629632engpin19642020-11-25T13:19:03.6600000-06:00TWO-TON ENGINE HOIST : A tool for testing the maximum tensile strength of everything you forgot to disconnect. PHILLIPS SCREWDRIVER : Normally used to stab the vacuum seals under lids or for opening old-style paper-and-tin oil cans and splashing oil on your shirt; but can also be used, as the name implies, to strip out Phillips screw heads. STRAIGHT SCREWDRIVER : A tool for opening paint cans. Sometimes used to convert common slotted screws into non-removable screws and butchering your palms. PRY BAR : A tool used to crumple the metal surrounding that clip or bracket you needed to remove in order to replace a 50 cent part. HOSE CUTTER : A tool used to make hoses too short. HAMMER : Originally employed as a weapon of war, the hammer nowadays is used as a kind of divining rod to locate the most expensive parts adjacent the object we are trying to hit. UTILITY KNIFE : Used to open and slice through the contents of cardboard cartons delivered to your front door; works particularly well on contents such as seats, vinyl records, liquids in plastic bottles, collector magazines, refund checks, and rubber or plastic parts. Especially useful for slicing work clothes, but only while in use. ADJUSTABLE WRENCH: aka "Another hammer", aka "the Swedish Nut Lathe", aka "Crescent Wrench". Commonly used as a one size fits all wrench, usually results in rounding off nut heads before the use of pliers. Will randomly adjust size between bolts, resulting in busted buckles, curse words, and multiple threats to any inanimate objects within the immediate vicinity. Son of a bitch TOOL : Any handy tool that you grab and throw across the garage while yelling 'Son of a b*tch' at the top of your lungs. It is also, most often, the next tool that you will need.😂 (4)

168294269552705929216limeytx2022-06-07T09:53:08.0690000-05:00Made some from antler, but not bone. its a stinky process 😄👍 (1)
169630619995063189504quattroquattro2022-07-01T12:07:20.1950000-05:00In the middle ages most blacksmiths not only made weapons, but sold them right out of their "smithy" directly to their customers, avoiding third party sellers entirely. It's a classic example of He who smelt it dealt it!😋 (2)

189316809616828923904hon1nbo2022-11-19T00:45:14.9690000-06:00This is a new unit too; I got sick of making new ones over the years as they eventually burn out, so finally caved and bought a unit.
190316809616828923904hon1nbo2022-11-19T00:45:23.4850000-06:00And ofc this happens
191316809616828923904hon1nbo2022-11-19T00:45:50.6370000-06:00I ran a few ingot pours fine keeping an eye on it, but it's not something to leave like that for sure

195316809616828923904hon1nbo2022-11-19T18:17:17.2180000-06:00So another night of smelting goeshttps://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/300062400550273024/1043681403084226671/PXL_20221120_001607263.jpg?ex=67b9c04d&is=67b86ecd&hm=01d8cbbdf25f457f8e2b55594b37a7f092fb93d44e73f1842dcce082217d008d&
196316809616828923904hon1nbo2022-11-19T19:22:34.3770000-06:00My DANGER WHISK has been surprisingly useful for keeping things smooth. Need to grab some borax to get a little better flowhttps://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/300062400550273024/1043697832974106634/PXL_20221120_005911644.jpg?ex=67b926da&is=67b7d55a&hm=65ce4661574bdf1e305b88d90564c09cb70ef91cfe84d3999d76e247e65e5176&
197316809616828923904hon1nbo2022-11-19T19:24:09.6050000-06:00Mount slag big as usual for aluminium can stock (plastic liner and paint). There's more aluminium in it then I'd like. My current pyrometer doesn't get to temp fast enough to see if surface temp is just too low for separation or if I need additives just to later better. The borax may actually help with this anywayhttps://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/300062400550273024/1043698232682885141/PXL_20221120_005907430.jpg?ex=67b92739&is=67b7d5b9&hm=90f01c8d4e2b0d933a6fcc80ebd0b8aa0940edb5833797d3dc763757c72f6fab&

199165164697073614849ketsana2022-12-26T07:40:39.9460000-06:00I need to melt more brass
200189645236908064768themitch222022-12-26T13:36:05.6000000-06:00Aluminum casting looks like fun. You just don't want moisture I know
201189645236908064768themitch222022-12-26T13:36:23.1110000-06:00It would be nice if it's good enough to machine
202189645236908064768themitch222022-12-26T13:36:40.8160000-06:00I'd imagine it's pourous and brittle for machining
203316809616828923904hon1nbo2022-12-26T21:38:13.7990000-06:00I'm gonna find out eventually. I expect poor machining but who knows
204570472690541002764hardsuit2022-12-26T23:24:06.2360000-06:00You can improve the properties of the cast by using known quality aluminum ( not just random melted down scrap), and there are chemicals you can add to help degass or otherwise promote more consistent casting
205570472690541002764hardsuit2022-12-26T23:26:10.8560000-06:00A lot of the casting that I have seen done here in the past was using aluminum cans or extrusions of one type or another, which typically are alloys that aren't ideal for casting
206570472690541002764hardsuit2022-12-26T23:26:53.2030000-06:00Works fine to practice with or for non structural pieces
207570472690541002764hardsuit2022-12-26T23:30:13.6990000-06:00Quick Google search pops up the 300 series alloys for better casting properties
208316809616828923904hon1nbo2022-12-27T14:18:05.4790000-06:00The point of the can aluminium is just fun, decorative and doing something with the large volume of cans consumed in my home
209316809616828923904hon1nbo2022-12-27T14:19:16.6560000-06:00Addition of Borax typically helps in terms of flow; bigger issue is first need to cast stock, then cast for pouring. Too many impurities to scrape out first melt.
210316809616828923904hon1nbo2022-12-27T14:20:02.0030000-06:00For structural casting I'm actually looking at casting silicon bronze to make brazable attachments to metalworking projects
