6300087429052760065danielh36802017-04-08T23:01:41.1550000-05:00Hey, check out this expensive resistor I found! http://www.mouser.com/search/ProductDetail.aspx?R=0virtualkey0virtualkeyPTF5610K000TZEKv
7300087429052760065danielh36802017-04-08T23:02:22.6520000-05:00A steal at only $12 per unit, it's a 0.01% 5ppm/C precision, low-noise job
8303049734724124673tmc424238862017-04-16T01:19:58.7620000-05:00Not sure why, but I've joined now. Spent several hours at the space today. Finally got the new controller board hooked up to my 3D printer.
9194641296529424386canibalcrab2017-04-16T01:29:12.1490000-05:00@tmc4242 because you arent afraid of change!
10189645236908064768themitch222017-04-16T01:29:27.5840000-05:00Which controller board

14303049734724124673tmc424238862017-04-16T01:33:05.7790000-05:00Will do Mitch. Have to actually get it to print something next. Hopefully the calibration phase won't be too bad.
15194641296529424386canibalcrab2017-04-16T01:48:08.6760000-05:00@tmc4242 i assure you i didnt do it for the sake of change, sorry your work has it banned, but they probably did that to make sure you are working at work. if youd like to argue about the merits of it we can move to a PM or #general_chatter
16303049734724124673tmc424238862017-04-16T01:49:25.4350000-05:00Nothing to argue about. I see no merit. Your comments about my work are not welcome either.

18111996864089358336banditbingo2017-05-05T13:45:03.1500000-05:00I think my rpi1bs are crapping out after 3 years

21111996864089358336banditbingo2017-05-05T16:57:02.9580000-05:00@Raymond they sell that at micro centre?
22309079425679360000raymond0119052017-05-05T18:41:20.4230000-05:00i think tanner's will have it
23309079425679360000raymond0119052017-05-05T18:41:55.2930000-05:00if you would've asked yesterday i couldn't picked up some today in silicon valley before flying home tomorrow on a red-eye
24309079425679360000raymond0119052017-05-05T18:42:09.0830000-05:00but the store closes in 19 minutes and i'm across town from it
25309079425679360000raymond0119052017-05-05T18:43:29.9850000-05:00you can also find thermal adhesive in 2 part form but that's more permanent. fry's and micro center both carry that
26111996864089358336banditbingo2017-05-06T19:14:56.6890000-05:00@Raymond is thermal pads the thing ur talking about that's permanent?
27111996864089358336banditbingo2017-05-06T19:15:04.4060000-05:00that's what I'm buying at micro center.
28111996864089358336banditbingo2017-05-06T19:15:13.4050000-05:00tanner doesn't have thermal tape

31309079425679360000raymond0119052017-05-08T09:41:48.9520000-05:00Thermal pads are different... they aren't adhesive. MC only carries the pads, thermal compound, or thermal adhesive 2-part epoxy mix.
32309079425679360000raymond0119052017-05-08T09:42:09.5440000-05:00they don't carry thermal tape that holds the heatsink on without screws/clamps
33207961619538378762denzuko2017-05-08T11:20:10.0810000-05:00@Raymond that just remind me of https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-4gbBGWxt8Uk/WF52Qjr0JnI/AAAAAAAAByk/gp_PX0pDfr4sNooLks8pkbFGxII6HdemwCLcB/s1600/Groot.jpg
34207961619538378762denzuko2017-06-06T11:59:24.2640000-05:00would anyone know of a good way to "short" two gpio pins in tiny package that will do the short/switch on a VCC pulse but does send a electric signal to either connector?
35207961619538378762denzuko2017-06-06T12:00:16.1080000-05:00I'm thinking something like a very tiny relay of sorts, but not sure which parts and part number would work
36207961619538378762denzuko2017-06-07T11:53:15.2350000-05:00maybe a mosfet would work? but how would one close the circuit so it acts more like a button?
37300372290586279938darrent_2017-06-08T13:09:24.8250000-05:00It sounds like you need a conversion from momentary switch behavior to latching behavior.

39300372290586279938darrent_2017-06-08T13:10:47.1590000-05:00Figure 2 sounds like what you are wanting to do where the Power Input net and the Switched Power net are the GPIO lines that you wish to short together.
40209077109631614977pogopadawan2017-06-08T18:50:16.9280000-05:00I'm looking for help with networking two Raspberry Pis via an Ad-Hoc network. Does anyone know who I could talk to about this?

43207961619538378762denzuko2017-06-08T21:46:28.2310000-05:00lol. yes I'm the resident IT/Linux/RPI guru @pogopadawan
44207961619538378762denzuko2017-06-08T21:47:06.2300000-05:00so I guess you're doing this over WiFi? would you be using ipv4 or ipv6?
45207961619538378762denzuko2017-06-08T21:48:10.6430000-05:00also, would you be using rasbian or arch?
46209077109631614977pogopadawan2017-06-08T22:00:11.7930000-05:00Yes. I'm using ipv4 on raspbian. Currently I'm using project Byzantium to get a base working, but it doesn't give me as many options as I need. If you are here now I'm in the common area to talk more if needed.
47300372290586279938darrent_2017-06-12T16:58:48.4410000-05:00Left my water bottle in the room. Will pick up later this evening.
48207961619538378762denzuko2017-06-30T19:10:36.6720000-05:00sorry @art I just found a spanner I was using in my pocket when I got home. Guess I had a brain fart or got destination. I'll be by this weekend to wrap up a few things on my back log so I'll bring it by and donate a little to your committee while I'm at it.
49302122548404027392artg_dms81852017-07-01T11:36:00.1740000-05:00Thanks!
50207961619538378762denzuko2017-07-02T02:06:36.3320000-05:00the spanner is right back at home in his drawer at the space. again sorry about that. is there anything pressing you guys are needing for the committee like tools or supplies?
51302122548404027392artg_dms81852017-07-02T09:34:21.5020000-05:00At the moment no. Will be ordering in the near future. Need to do a walk around the Space to round up/return tools. If you run across tools w/ yellow on them, they probably need to be returned the ELab.
52207961619538378762denzuko2017-07-03T07:25:25.3780000-05:00will do

54315861830364823563anandelamaran2017-08-07T17:38:09.3000000-05:00Just checking, is the 'Wavetek Model 143' Function generator working and available to use? I am planning to do some experiments this weekend so wanted to know before visiting the space. Thanks.
55198563718026493952stark4machines2017-08-13T14:09:12.3010000-05:00Can I get someone's help on a Line 6 Delay Pedal? It's never been dropped or anything, but I assume it's a loose jack connection or something simple. It powers on and everything, but no audio. Any help would be greatly appreciated! (718) 795-3187
56432401820569042944kevpat2018-04-13T23:57:55.4560000-05:00As far as the expansion goes. May I suggest a computer test bench.
57432401820569042944kevpat2018-04-18T19:16:18.6500000-05:00I got Ultra Violet & Side emitting LEDs coming for the Mouser sign. I think UV would look the cleanest. But having a colorful Bluetooth one where anyone could scan the bar code and play with different light configs on their phone would be fun also. Any opinions but anoying if its not on the outside of the wall. I suggest UV inside & Color RGB outside
58263957475718463488blackfire_tx90402018-04-19T01:43:11.4490000-05:00Anyone want to try to repair a UPS? It has, appearantly, a bad charging board that was taken out. I modified the board to allow for an external fuse w/o success in fixing the board.

60346385239918116865gothannie2018-05-23T15:21:40.3400000-05:00Does anyone have a suggestion to where I could purchase solar panels (DIY small 9V) locally? I checked Tanners but they don't have one that large. Unless I missed it.
61227790908035170305adam13342018-05-24T18:04:40.3100000-05:00Harbor Freight sells some of what I'll call midsize panels, but I think they're 12V. Maybe a camping store, but you're likely to pay out the nose for them as they'll be productized.
62371416661040955403talkers2018-08-06T12:05:45.5860000-05:00@VenomV you can get a higher voltage panel (like 12v-24v) and a Buck convertor (<$10) to bring the voltage down to 9v

69190945022399610890timooni2018-12-14T17:31:56.9590000-06:00Hey, so I don't know if this was passed or if it was just being talked about
70190945022399610890timooni2018-12-14T17:33:15.3710000-06:00but y'know that major victory for right to repair? Able to reverse engineer devices and software for the purposes of repair, in exception to any EULA / TOS / Copyright whatever
71190945022399610890timooni2018-12-14T17:33:56.3630000-06:00for example, iphones / ipad DRM, john deere onboard computers, etc
72190945022399610890timooni2018-12-14T17:35:46.0460000-06:00well i had this shower thought that this exception could be used for the development of repair techniques, or for larger groups to publish fixes for these devices so that as companies make the DRM more difficult to break, individuals don't have to reinvent the wheel. Larger groups can stay on top of it and make it easy.
73190945022399610890timooni2018-12-14T17:37:55.9140000-06:00if it's legal for an individual to reverse engineer DRM to repair their device, is it also legal for a nonprofit to reverse engineer DRM for anyone to be able to repair the same device? I'd imagine so. If that's the case, we should totally do that. I think there are people here qualified to do stuff like that.
74516152872522743828dinkbatt2019-01-17T18:54:47.2070000-06:00there's already quite a few how to fix websites and youtube channels that will provide detailed instructions on, well, pretty much anythign you would need to fix ever. https://www.ifixit.com/ for starters. among many others
75516152872522743828dinkbatt2019-01-17T18:54:58.0360000-06:00not sure if that's what you're referring to? a collection of information easily referencable?
76190945022399610890timooni2019-01-17T22:31:21.7590000-06:00ifixit is a good resource yeah
77190945022399610890timooni2019-01-17T22:31:32.4160000-06:00but i mean unofficial patches to circumvent apple drm for example
78190945022399610890timooni2019-01-17T22:31:42.2860000-06:00we could develop them under the pretense of repairability
79516152872522743828dinkbatt2019-01-20T03:11:36.7600000-06:00ohhhhhhhhhhhh
80516152872522743828dinkbatt2019-01-20T03:11:40.5540000-06:00cough you mean like jailbreaking
81325498566762299393mizgeek2019-01-20T03:12:29.6650000-06:00🙀
82516152872522743828dinkbatt2019-01-20T03:13:18.7690000-06:00im pretty sure the jailbreaking gets released by anyone and everyone that can develop it as fast as possible. OS cracking is, well, a science and art whoever has a ridiculous amount of free time and experience to crack it. also some phones on the lower end of the android are just flat out not worth cracking due to low specs that make it usefulles for just about anything outside manufacturer intended tasks?💯 (1)
83516152872522743828dinkbatt2019-01-20T03:13:38.3080000-06:00sorry not trying to overly criticize, just providing a feasiblity assemsement
84516152872522743828dinkbatt2019-01-20T03:14:11.6820000-06:00like i've definitely done like 3/4 of a comp sci degree and jailbrekaing is not something volunteer workers can just knock out in a few sittings.
85190945022399610890timooni2019-01-31T15:39:14.0950000-06:00I see ok
86296874308028858370randouser12019-03-03T11:14:45.1910000-06:00question, if you step down DC power with a buck converter... say a 12V 3A power supply to 5v with a buck converter rated for 3 amps
87296874308028858370randouser12019-03-03T11:14:51.4450000-06:00do you get 5V 3A?

93296874308028858370randouser12019-03-03T11:21:14.8640000-06:00if I step down 12v to 5V for the fans, can I still power those 3 fans
94194641296529424386canibalcrab2019-03-03T11:21:37.8860000-06:00The booster should have it detailed on the spec right?

98388213344236077056doug.emes2019-04-09T21:20:23.2620000-05:00So Pearce and I were talking about neopixels... I'm talking with my DPRG buddies and I think I might be able to implement a touch slide at best, or 2 touch buttons at worst for a mode up/down
99388213344236077056doug.emes2019-04-09T21:40:06.4000000-05:00im digging into the 187 page guide now
100194641296529424386canibalcrab2019-04-10T00:11:54.9840000-05:00im not totally sure i follow
101194641296529424386canibalcrab2019-04-10T00:12:27.5350000-05:00actually im not even sure i know how the touch lamps work except that it has to be on a metal surface
102388213344236077056doug.emes2019-04-10T00:39:35.6270000-05:00So on the nine dollar trinket board, it has 3 of the pins of the actual chip able to be used for capacitive touch . One of those is also the direct memory access pin for driving the neopixels.
103388213344236077056doug.emes2019-04-10T00:41:06.4960000-05:00But that still leaves us another normal gpio pin for another selection. So in theory one cap touch can be mode up, and the other mode down
104388213344236077056doug.emes2019-04-10T00:42:27.6040000-05:00I tried updating to circuit python 3.x but lost my code, but I had it at home still so tomorrow night I should be able to virtually start fresh
105194641296529424386canibalcrab2019-04-10T00:42:28.5790000-05:00interesting. i think id only need one though since all the sides are soldered together
106194641296529424386canibalcrab2019-04-10T00:43:21.6870000-05:00but making any of my stained glass stuff cap touch activated sounds awesome
107388213344236077056doug.emes2019-04-10T00:43:51.4180000-05:00If we try a strip of copper tape or what not, I should in theory be able to make a slider but I need to do some trsting
108388213344236077056doug.emes2019-04-10T00:44:43.2970000-05:00Anyways I've got the hankering to figure this out
109194641296529424386canibalcrab2019-04-10T00:45:57.8400000-05:00youd have to figure out how to turn a single large surface into a slider, like maybe have it compare between the two pins connected to the same surface
110388213344236077056doug.emes2019-04-10T00:46:08.1560000-05:00Yes
111388213344236077056doug.emes2019-04-10T11:08:28.6250000-05:00Ok I determined my prior code wasn't on circuit python but in arduino... which I already know how to do cases, so should have something this coming weekend. Right now I'm slammed with work learning all the new things in my new gig

146456226577798135808Deleted User2019-11-28T20:16:29.7850000-06:00Quick question
147456226577798135808Deleted User2019-11-28T20:19:16.7660000-06:00I have an Arduino Uno with a relay shield. I connected the positive of an extension cord in series with the relay contacts on the board and everything works fine when I'm plugged into the computer. As soon as I remove the USB, and connect it to a 5v power supply (board standard), the relays won't fire. The LEDs for the relays fire...but the relays themselves don't fire...any ideas?
148194641296529424386canibalcrab2019-11-28T20:25:27.8360000-06:00I believe the relay board needs its own power. The 5v from a USB won't be enough to power it

151194641296529424386canibalcrab2019-11-28T20:43:23.4110000-06:00USB is going to be 5v and .05 amp unless you have a powered usb

158194641296529424386canibalcrab2019-11-28T20:46:10.8210000-06:00In theory once you have more power it will work since the led worked. That means it got the right code

174540021655909695488michaelb52502019-11-28T22:21:44.8180000-06:00And keep in mind that DC jack isn't actually designed for 5v, it's meant for like 7-12v iirc. They have a 5v regulator on it, sonif you give it exactly 5v the regulator cant regulate and behaves unexpectedly

179432401820569042944kevpat2019-11-28T23:28:14.6490000-06:00Well usb is 3.3v if it likes that. Feed it that
180388213344236077056doug.emes2019-11-28T23:33:06.5280000-06:00USB has NEVER been 3.3,
181371416661040955403talkers2019-11-29T02:54:21.9240000-06:00@Deleted User you should be good just using a USB cable and power adapter. USB is 5v. You really should not need a lot of amps for the relays. They are just magnetic switches.
182456226577798135808Deleted User2019-11-29T08:21:38.3800000-06:00@john a gorman well that doesn't answer the issue at hand, which is that the relays won't fire, but the LED for the relay does. Makes no sense
183371416661040955403talkers2019-11-29T08:24:01.2230000-06:00You were right that power isn't an issue if it works off the PC USB. As Pearce says, that's only 1/2 an amp
184371416661040955403talkers2019-11-29T08:24:14.1440000-06:00I would look at the code
185540021655909695488michaelb52502019-11-29T08:46:15.7720000-06:00Where'd you get the relay board? This really depends on where the board gets its power from (Arduino provides 5v, 3.3v, and 'Vin' pins on its headers)
186371416661040955403talkers2019-11-29T08:51:05.5250000-06:00@michaelb the relay shield should be pulling power off the uno board
187371416661040955403talkers2019-11-29T08:51:48.3440000-06:00So it will pull what it needs
188540021655909695488michaelb52502019-11-29T08:56:14.9950000-06:00It matters which pin the relay board pulls from.
189540021655909695488michaelb52502019-11-29T08:57:00.6620000-06:00By providing 5v to the DC jack, the VIN and 5v pins will hover around 4.5v, and the 3.3v will still be 3.3.
190540021655909695488michaelb52502019-11-29T08:57:54.7710000-06:00So if it pulls power from 3.3v that's not the issue. If it's expecting 5v then it could have problems
191316809616828923904hon1nbo2019-11-29T14:28:48.4410000-06:00What Michael said. The LED on the relay output may have enough power after the voltage drop, but the coil may not make an appropriate field strength.👌 (1)
192456226577798135808Deleted User2019-11-29T17:13:25.2000000-06:00I mean the shield just stacks onto the Uno and pinouts all go through to the relay board
193456226577798135808Deleted User2019-11-29T17:13:49.1730000-06:00So I'm not really sure. I'll grab my multi meter later and check it to see
194540021655909695488michaelb52502019-11-29T17:16:45.4930000-06:00If you know who you bought it from they might have the schematic available
195540021655909695488michaelb52502019-11-29T17:17:02.1900000-06:00But really the answer is find a 7-12v supply and try that.
196456226577798135808Deleted User2019-11-29T17:24:41.8890000-06:00I mean it's an Arduino Uno and a Seeed Relay Shield
197456226577798135808Deleted User2019-11-29T17:31:28.1210000-06:00But does that 7-12v power supply plug into the built in connector on the Uno?
198540021655909695488michaelb52502019-11-29T18:31:27.5660000-06:00Yeah the 7-12v plugs into the black DC jack on the uno
199456226577798135808Deleted User2019-11-29T21:35:59.6840000-06:00Ok cool thanks. I'll have to track that down.
200627685589109571594denzuko52452020-01-17T01:33:42.2880000-06:00Random question, does one have to flash a fresh esp8266 esp01 or does the at command modes work out of the box with an ftdi board?
201627685589109571594denzuko52452020-01-17T01:35:23.6090000-06:00Ordered https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07NWD1TQM and just like the last attempt a few years ago I get zilch from the port but the device does seem to be "functioning" when tested with a multimeter.

204316809616828923904hon1nbo2020-02-15T14:09:42.3660000-06:00It's pretty easy to do that may mod, and most CRTs have good isolation of the HV from what you'd want to mess with. Since the tubes are typically replaceable, they are commonly using Spade connectors. You can pull one pair and if it is the vertical scan done, otherwise replace spades and grab the other pair These units are fun, but unless you make a new driver for the X sweep you are limited in what you can do with it.
205194641296529424386canibalcrab2020-02-15T14:12:09.8300000-06:00Crts are pretty easy to be careful with. There's one real big wire that attaches to the tube and transformer to watch out for

258540021655909695488michaelb52502020-05-17T00:09:02.0680000-05:00Yeah, it's KiCad, I jumped over from eagle about a year after Autodesk went subscription based. It's got it's quirks but it works fine for the simple stuff I do.
259263153628141977603kentamanos2020-05-17T00:10:14.4380000-05:00yeah, I don't do much, but when I do, I use KiCad. Haven't really done anything in 5 yet.
260540021655909695488michaelb52502020-05-17T00:10:52.2460000-05:00This is a not yet finished 5v power supply, 90-245Vac in. The goal here is 3A continuous output with as small a quiesscent power draw as possible. Hopefully under 0.1W at 240v.
261540021655909695488michaelb52502020-05-17T00:12:45.6540000-05:00Few things are working out if I really need the two giant 270uF input caps, it needs better output capacitance, figure out if it meets inrush specs, and I should probably check the diodes/fet since they're more or less just whatever mouser has the most stock of
262263153628141977603kentamanos2020-05-17T00:13:15.5930000-05:00Having some issues with my current project. trying to use some MOSFET's to convert 3.3v PWM to 5v PWM for a LED strip for this thing: https://talk.dallasmakerspace.org/t/show-and-tell-may-2020/71025/11
263263153628141977603kentamanos2020-05-17T00:14:19.9060000-05:00It's possible I just bought a completely wrong MOSFET (used a IRF520), but I can never get it to switch 5v (it's actually lower than the 3.3v)
264263153628141977603kentamanos2020-05-17T00:14:40.3650000-05:00low frequency PWM too, knocked it down to about 100Hz, no difference
265263153628141977603kentamanos2020-05-17T00:15:31.8650000-05:00I might try to simulate it on LTSpice etc. at some point, but I have to get back up to speed on all that stuff too (including importing a custom model for the part)
266540021655909695488michaelb52502020-05-17T00:19:03.6860000-05:00Yeah that's a power mosfet so it's really designed for a 10v Vgs. Any gate voltage below about 4v and you won't fully turn it on, which makes the design much more complicated.
267263153628141977603kentamanos2020-05-17T00:19:37.1240000-05:00yeah, just randomly Google'd "3.3v pwm to 5v led strip" and I see someone whining about this exact MOSFET: https://www.raspberrypi.org/forums/viewtopic.php?t=261273
268263153628141977603kentamanos2020-05-17T00:20:06.2090000-05:00clearly Mouser gave my newbie ass too many options 🙂
269540021655909695488michaelb52502020-05-17T00:20:29.7240000-05:00If I'm looking for a logic level fet I'll usually pull up the datasheet and look at the Rds(on) parameter. Not the value, but the test conditions. They spec Rds(on) at the Vgs they intend for you to run.
270540021655909695488michaelb52502020-05-17T00:20:52.4170000-05:00Logic level fets will have a spec at Vgs=3.3v for example.
271540021655909695488michaelb52502020-05-17T00:21:38.4950000-05:00And lol what I said earlier really is my method. What do they stock the most of. I.e, I'm not doing something special, and others know better, so what's everyone else buying.
272263153628141977603kentamanos2020-05-17T00:23:19.4600000-05:00yeah, I watched the Digikey video series on KiCad, and when sourcing parts (obviously on Digikey), he just sorted by what they had the most stock of, and his reasoning was they stock what sells...hehe
273540021655909695488michaelb52502020-05-17T00:25:34.2750000-05:00So here's a sparkfun level shifter, they're using a BSS138: http://cdn.sparkfun.com/datasheets/BreakoutBoards/Logic_Level_Bidirectional.pdf If you don't want surface mount, adafruit sells a 'Logic Level N channel fet', the IRLB8721. Obviously mouser sells both parts.
274540021655909695488michaelb52502020-05-17T00:26:19.9520000-05:00Also, that level shifter works in both directions and is a neat little trick with mosfets.
275263153628141977603kentamanos2020-05-17T00:27:52.9560000-05:00I randomly ran across something on Amazon and solder'd one up (I probably need to test connections on it, because I suck at soldering): https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B07LG646VS/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o04_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
276263153628141977603kentamanos2020-05-17T00:28:22.8960000-05:00Not sure exactly what mosfet that uses, let me see if I can read it...

280540021655909695488michaelb52502020-05-17T00:36:18.5580000-05:00That would be surprising. It looks like a copy of the sparkfun circuit (with a different transistor), and I don't think that circuit works with a PNP transistor.
281263153628141977603kentamanos2020-05-17T00:36:42.6700000-05:00I think I got what I paid for on the price etc...hehe
282263153628141977603kentamanos2020-05-17T00:37:07.0320000-05:00good soldering practice for the header pins I guess...I need it 🙂

286189645236908064768themitch222020-05-17T01:13:02.0290000-05:00I might just start with a simple break out board
287263153628141977603kentamanos2020-05-17T02:41:18.4860000-05:00FWIW later Michael, I found a model and simulated it in LTSpice. 3.3v definitely doesn't fit the bill (blue is voltage at drain, green is PWM of 3.3v):https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/300062878676025344/711483470492467210/unknown.png?ex=67b97f9e&is=67b82e1e&hm=80c0c0e4eada1941f363fd09c006070843e9993a1d4041c4ca6d0b73ef2f0b73&

305540021655909695488michaelb52502020-05-25T19:02:53.6970000-05:00Quick, Erik, if Mitch put a reed switch/magnet on the foot, what value capacitor would I need to put in parallel with the inductor to limit the frog foot vibrations to 10 hurt-z?
306547106163842613259nullinterface2020-05-25T19:53:10.6280000-05:00how fast can someone to open and close the switch? if you incentivize them with money?
307540021655909695488michaelb52502020-05-25T20:06:13.7970000-05:00The inductor and capacitor naturally oscillate so once the switch is opened the foot would convulse a few times at their natural frequency and eventually dissipate all the energy and stop.
308263153628141977603kentamanos2020-05-30T21:28:54.5250000-05:00Opened up an extra remote and repurposing it for home automation usage. Original power was 3v coin cell but tolerates 3.3v just fine. Sending it serial commands to "press" the buttons right now, but eventually will be REST calls making it open garage, workshop, and gate.https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/300062878676025344/716478281771122728/IMG_20200530_212257.jpg?ex=67b93665&is=67b7e4e5&hm=5f63cba4c8607cb9b721cedd04a00ec40b9ddcff865e688234cb142cee02ba8f&❤️ (2)
309456226577798135808Deleted User2020-06-07T09:29:26.5670000-05:00I need help selecting an amp for my new passive speakers. The speakers say the amplifier power should be 10-150 watts. I did some research and an internet guy said you should get 1.5X the wattage for each channel. But he also said to ignore the maximum wattage. So Should I get 15 watts per channel or 225? The speakers have a nominal impedance of 4 ohms, so I think I need to get an amp that does 4 ohms per channel. Here are the specs:https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/300062878676025344/719196325505400882/Screenshot_20200607-092904.jpg?ex=67b93686&is=67b7e506&hm=fde852ffb8c58961f7081fd30c5716d2903be32f0456c59c717f7fb1560ceeac&

326540021655909695488michaelb52502020-06-24T23:33:26.8910000-05:00There's an electronic load in science that can probably do that. Set a current limit, constant voltage mode for 10v.

335263153628141977603kentamanos2020-07-02T00:19:54.3700000-05:00I have kind of a stupid electronics question: can you buy small pre-made electromagnets? Basically a small piece of ferrous metal wrapped in "magnet wire". I have an idea for something I want to try out, but I might not want to hand wrap LOTS of them myself. I've read about some people trying to use inductors for such a job, but having a hard time telling if that really works. It's also a seemingly hard thing to Google successfully or find on Mouser. Technically this could be called a solenoid I THINK, but most of those results include the moving actuator type piece.
336188482200658903040skyspook2020-07-02T08:09:09.2240000-05:00Try searching for "holding magnet"
337188482200658903040skyspook2020-07-02T08:09:54.3010000-05:00Or similar. I see adafruit sells some, and ebay has similar. Depends on what holding force you need
338547106163842613259nullinterface2020-07-02T08:42:27.8720000-05:00solenoids are going to be optimized for moving the plunger
339547106163842613259nullinterface2020-07-02T09:07:14.2250000-05:00generally a hollow form with a sprung ferrous mass that pulls the mass into it against the spring with the actuator itself being pulled in or pushed out depending on orientation
340263153628141977603kentamanos2020-07-02T09:59:37.2530000-05:00@ESmith Ah, "plunger" is a better term. The weird part seems to be TECHNICALLY a solenoid doesn't have to include that plunger but all the practical searches for that word include it. I think I need very little force, but a lot of them. I'm thinking about using them to push away a permanent magnet for a "pen up" operation on a polar bot type plotter (like Brandon's Gocupi back in the day). @Skyspook I'll look around for "holding magnets" and that seems to be a better search term, but the combination of size and prize might scare me off. I don't think need them to be as strong as most offerings etc. and might just have to wind my own (which would be a lot of them if they seem like they'd work).
341547106163842613259nullinterface2020-07-02T10:02:44.4040000-05:00solenoids are generally used for short linear *binary* motion applications - power door locks, car starters, appliance safety locks, sprinkler valves - thus the plunger is a natural accessory
342547106163842613259nullinterface2020-07-02T10:07:07.7400000-05:00a bit lost on your desire to push a magnet around when a more conventional plunger seems simpler and likely to fit within turnkey solutions out there in the market
343547106163842613259nullinterface2020-07-02T10:08:21.1990000-05:00most solenoids that I've seen are of two styles: cylindrical or square. both concentrate the magnetic field inside the housing containing the windings.
344547106163842613259nullinterface2020-07-02T10:10:40.8970000-05:00in a previous career I designed some gear that used solenoids for pneumatic valves as well as releasing spring-loaded catches
345547106163842613259nullinterface2020-07-02T10:12:45.6160000-05:00rotary actuators are another style I occasionally considered; they spare the designer the need to devise a mechanism to shoehorn a linear solenoid into such an application
346547106163842613259nullinterface2020-07-02T10:13:28.1500000-05:00I recall they also applied force more predictably and more consistently through the range of motion
347547106163842613259nullinterface2020-07-02T10:13:34.0670000-05:00anyway - I'm babbling
348263153628141977603kentamanos2020-07-02T11:00:54.9070000-05:00Ideally, I want it to be physically contact free. Most people do the "pen up" with a servo for instance (and a solenoid could also be used here), but that servo "scratches" previous dry erase work while it moves around (even if it has a very small contact point). Would be cool to push it away by ramping up electromagnets (not really levitating, just pushing away from the mostly vertical board) and then bring it back down by ramping electromagnets back down. This also means no power wires running to the stylus (or batteries) for a solenoid/servo. Not sure of the practicality overall, but I want to try an array of these magnets for this job.
349547106163842613259nullinterface2020-07-02T11:24:51.1560000-05:00if you're not manipulating the pen up/down electrically then how are you doing it?
350263153628141977603kentamanos2020-07-02T11:38:17.6450000-05:00electromagnets behind the board in theory repulsing a permanent magnet. No idea if it will work etc, but want to try it.
351263153628141977603kentamanos2020-07-02T11:38:44.6870000-05:00would in theory cause it to swing away, allow it to move and then come back down
352263153628141977603kentamanos2020-07-02T11:39:22.8190000-05:00it's either this or compressed air on the stylus...hehe
353300080747673288704kenpurcell2020-07-02T11:45:51.9650000-05:00??? Magnetic sheet behind the board with one electromagnet on the draw head, or permanent magnet on drawing head and a ton of electromagnets behind the board?
354300080747673288704kenpurcell2020-07-02T11:47:19.9770000-05:00sounds similar in idea of flip discs that have a tiny electromagnet to swap contrasting sides.
355547106163842613259nullinterface2020-07-02T12:02:39.6140000-05:00now the need for a great quantity of electromagnets makes sense
356570472690541002764hardsuit2020-07-02T12:20:32.6600000-05:00Thus is reminding me of a coffee table concept I want to build

360263153628141977603kentamanos2020-07-02T12:22:32.5320000-05:00yeah, I have considered a "mirror stylus" so to speak behind the board I could activate like that
361263153628141977603kentamanos2020-07-02T12:22:53.1980000-05:00could hook up to the same motors etc. and therefore be in the same spot
362263153628141977603kentamanos2020-07-02T12:23:02.1200000-05:00that's starting to sound better 🙂
363263153628141977603kentamanos2020-07-02T12:23:25.5640000-05:00makes the whole thing a bit thicker though
364263153628141977603kentamanos2020-07-02T12:23:42.2380000-05:00(deeper might be better word here)
365263153628141977603kentamanos2020-07-02T12:24:50.1950000-05:00fairly sure I couldn't make a huge electromagnet the size of the entire white board and get the results I want, right?
366300080747673288704kenpurcell2020-07-02T12:34:30.6810000-05:00hm interesting. Take some masonite pegboard, press in some metal sleeves and wind magnet wire around each pin. Wonder if you could weave it like core memory and have it work.
367263153628141977603kentamanos2020-07-02T12:41:13.6500000-05:00that's a good idea too. Much more scalable than what I was thinking
368300080747673288704kenpurcell2020-07-02T12:52:10.0630000-05:00just the "resolution" is fixed by the pegboard unless you drill your own on smooth masonite
369263153628141977603kentamanos2020-07-02T12:52:44.3990000-05:00yeah, I think I just need to buy a crapload of "magnet wire" for now 😉
370263153628141977603kentamanos2020-07-02T12:52:53.3760000-05:00at least that's cheap
371300084800373391361slinkygn2020-07-09T10:37:20.1710000-05:00on the unlikely off chance that anybody knows off the top of their heads: in our random piles of SMD tape, are there any 0605 (or within spitting distance of) RGB LEDs?
372300084800373391361slinkygn2020-07-09T10:37:52.6790000-05:00A couple of them died out on a project board I have, and I'd rather pay the bin than drive all the way down to Mouser for 2 bucks worth of parts 🙂

375189645236908064768themitch222020-07-09T12:02:12.5300000-05:00From my understanding there is not really an organization of the smd reels in electronics. I'm sure if someone volunteered to do that, it would help.
376300080747673288704kenpurcell2020-07-09T13:16:59.2410000-05:00^ no org of most parts. Never saw addressable LEDs when we first got the donation.
377263153628141977603kentamanos2020-07-09T13:20:45.8380000-05:00is common anode vs common cathode also a thing in that sort of package?
378300080747673288704kenpurcell2020-07-09T13:22:01.7850000-05:00I usually only saw that in the four pin 10mm round packages
379300080747673288704kenpurcell2020-07-09T13:22:34.4610000-05:00Always bought the wrong version
380300084800373391361slinkygn2020-07-09T21:10:16.1850000-05:00yes, nonaddressable -- just dumb RGB LEDs, I don't need controllers embedded or otherwise 🙂 I'm not sure I've ever seen an 0605 addressable RGB LED!
381300084800373391361slinkygn2020-07-09T21:11:30.4760000-05:00And yes, most of those SMD reels have been strewn about the Electronics space since basically the dawn of time 🙂 I kinda figured it would just be dumb luck if somebody had bothered to sift through them at some point, likely looking for something else, and happened to have seen them.

403540021655909695488michaelb52502020-07-14T09:02:55.8610000-05:00We already have a reflow oven in electronics, not sure why we'd need a second one.

408300084800373391361slinkygn2020-07-14T12:24:43.2920000-05:00Comparing an ETS conveyor machine to a T962A is comparing a Haas to (edit) an X-carve
409540021655909695488michaelb52502020-07-14T12:30:37.8970000-05:00I mean those are indeed two CNCs
410540021655909695488michaelb52502020-07-14T12:31:12.2590000-05:00Purchasing a Haas when you don't even use your X-carve is a pretty big waste of money.
411300084800373391361slinkygn2020-07-14T12:33:57.6820000-05:00If you have stuff you can do with the X-carve, sure -- but that's not usually how people buy stuff.
412300084800373391361slinkygn2020-07-14T12:34:12.5470000-05:00You have a need, so you buy the thing that fits it -- not you buy a thing and hope your need fits it.
413300084800373391361slinkygn2020-07-14T12:34:34.5330000-05:00Purchasing an X-carve because you want to mill billet aluminum but can't afford a Haas is a pretty big waste of money.
414300084800373391361slinkygn2020-07-14T12:35:19.4820000-05:00The two aren't actually comparable.
415540021655909695488michaelb52502020-07-14T12:36:07.4650000-05:00You can, if it's the only tool you have, well you might as well try. Having the shiny toys doesn't make you any better at doing something.
416540021655909695488michaelb52502020-07-14T12:36:39.0360000-05:00Fact is, we have a reflow oven. It's the right price and size for us. We have no need for a large commercial oven
417540021655909695488michaelb52502020-07-14T12:37:48.7320000-05:00Waiting for it to heat up, having to panelize your PCBs so they fit in the conveyor, taking up all that space in an already crowded committee area, which one of these are the benefits that you think the large machine will bring us?
418540021655909695488michaelb52502020-07-14T12:39:27.5790000-05:00As for your 'more people will use this than use the Haas' comment, many more requests show up for the Haas on talk. I see many more people using it. Many more people have projects on the Haas.
419540021655909695488michaelb52502020-07-14T12:40:28.7690000-05:00There's only a small portion of the space that would even have a project that requires a reflow oven. So much so that people don't even ask if we have one or how to use it.
420300084800373391361slinkygn2020-07-14T14:54:17.5490000-05:00That's highly unlikely, considering how few people are certified on the HAAS and the fact that it is (supposed to be?) keylocked out. So if you're seeing all that many people using it they probably need to be reported.
421300084800373391361slinkygn2020-07-14T14:55:07.9410000-05:00Last I checked the AD list and crossed it with active members, I think I got a result set 2 long.
422300084800373391361slinkygn2020-07-14T14:56:55.2350000-05:00Whereas people may not ask about the reflow oven is because many people check the official reference for the tools available in e-lab -- in which the reflow oven isn't listed.
423300084800373391361slinkygn2020-07-14T14:57:48.6510000-05:00That list has in recent history (1-2yrs or so) been pretty well kept up, at least compared to other committees. Anything that wasn't on there was usually broken.
424300084800373391361slinkygn2020-07-14T14:58:22.2550000-05:00Which, as a matter of fact, was the state of the reflow oven we had there a few years back. I assume the one we're talking about isn't the same one? Or it got fixed, or something?
425300084800373391361slinkygn2020-07-14T14:58:49.7690000-05:00I would imagine it's a different one, as the old one was a member's, I think.
426540021655909695488michaelb52502020-07-14T14:58:49.8000000-05:00Many more than two people are currently trained on the Haas.
427540021655909695488michaelb52502020-07-14T14:59:07.8690000-05:00Let me ask you this, how many projects do you know of that required a reflow oven?
428300084800373391361slinkygn2020-07-14T14:59:08.3540000-05:00Trained and active, is what I checked.

434316809616828923904hon1nbo2020-07-14T14:59:44.7730000-05:00the Haas RFID lockout was made before the AD list and integration was setup

437540021655909695488michaelb52502020-07-14T15:00:05.8690000-05:00😂😂 well that's just wrong.
438300084800373391361slinkygn2020-07-14T15:00:10.5550000-05:00It has like four different HAAS groups. And again, HAAS at least used to be keylocked against one of those AD lists.
439316809616828923904hon1nbo2020-07-14T15:00:18.9440000-05:00dude, I'm the admin over AD
440316809616828923904hon1nbo2020-07-14T15:00:25.7520000-05:00those AD groups aren't the actual operators groups
441300084800373391361slinkygn2020-07-14T15:00:36.6760000-05:00There was a sync between Beagle one and that.
442316809616828923904hon1nbo2020-07-14T15:00:36.7540000-05:00and I literally was working on its beaglebone the other daty
443316809616828923904hon1nbo2020-07-14T15:00:41.3810000-05:00no, there isn't
444316809616828923904hon1nbo2020-07-14T15:00:44.0460000-05:00they're manually added
445540021655909695488michaelb52502020-07-14T15:00:57.1810000-05:00Barely any pcbs that go through DMS could even use a commercial reflow oven. I doubt many could use the desktop one.
446316809616828923904hon1nbo2020-07-14T15:01:00.3090000-05:00we in fact have a student that can't be added right now because the instructor couldn't SSH into the unit
447316809616828923904hon1nbo2020-07-14T15:01:06.2300000-05:00since they have to be added manually

449316809616828923904hon1nbo2020-07-14T15:01:29.5330000-05:00positive

451300084800373391361slinkygn2020-07-14T15:01:38.7210000-05:00Fair enough.

457300084800373391361slinkygn2020-07-14T15:02:29.7220000-05:00I am having trouble imagining a PCB project that couldn't use a reflow oven.
458300084800373391361slinkygn2020-07-14T15:02:39.6690000-05:00What, are people allergic to solder paste?
459300084800373391361slinkygn2020-07-14T15:03:06.2430000-05:00No, of course not. This was years ago when we were trying to integrate the new system in.
460540021655909695488michaelb52502020-07-14T15:03:08.3030000-05:00People are allergic to surface mount for one
461300084800373391361slinkygn2020-07-14T15:03:09.2810000-05:00New back then.
462540021655909695488michaelb52502020-07-14T15:03:29.8180000-05:00Kit PCBs don't come panelized to fit through a commercial oven.
463300084800373391361slinkygn2020-07-14T15:03:40.2860000-05:00I've seen *plenty* of SMD projects in e-lab.
464300084800373391361slinkygn2020-07-14T15:03:52.1480000-05:00You think that hot air tool goes unused?
465540021655909695488michaelb52502020-07-14T15:04:13.0210000-05:00It's not worth the trouble to run up such a big oven for your one board.
466300084800373391361slinkygn2020-07-14T15:04:17.6960000-05:00Anything that can use the hot air tool can use the toy reflow oven.
467540021655909695488michaelb52502020-07-14T15:04:33.3590000-05:00But not the giant one you want.
468316809616828923904hon1nbo2020-07-14T15:04:48.6640000-05:00there's a difference between a hobby scale reflow oven and a conveyor system
469316809616828923904hon1nbo2020-07-14T15:04:54.8340000-05:00meant for assembly lines
470300084800373391361slinkygn2020-07-14T15:05:46.9130000-05:00Okay, I'm getting whiplash here. Two arguments at once is enough, I'm not gonna do three. Are you standing by the statement that nobody does nearly anything that could use the reflow oven presently there? Or are you criticizing the desire for the big oven?
471540021655909695488michaelb52502020-07-14T15:05:47.7320000-05:00It's not going to be any faster if you're doing multiple anyways. You'll still be hand printing paste and hand placing components.
472540021655909695488michaelb52502020-07-14T15:06:46.3320000-05:00Alright, let's pick one. We don't need to replace our desktop over a commercial one.
473540021655909695488michaelb52502020-07-14T15:06:53.0930000-05:00And go.
474300084800373391361slinkygn2020-07-14T15:07:00.9620000-05:00We also used to have a small pick-n-place machine in there.
475300084800373391361slinkygn2020-07-14T15:07:08.6100000-05:00Oh, that's easy.
476300084800373391361slinkygn2020-07-14T15:07:50.2890000-05:00Read back at my "requests" that we pick it up, and "request" that we expand the E-lab space for it, and look at all the laugh emoji by them.
477540021655909695488michaelb52502020-07-14T15:08:36.7880000-05:00You mean your claim that it'll get more use than the Haas?
478540021655909695488michaelb52502020-07-14T15:08:56.6830000-05:00Oh is this going to be one of those 'I won't admit I'm wrong so I'll just play like it was sarcasm' things?
479540021655909695488michaelb52502020-07-14T15:08:59.6510000-05:00Let's find out.
480300084800373391361slinkygn2020-07-14T15:09:05.6950000-05:00And realize when you took something WAY too seriously - and expanded that to a scope where there *is* a legitimate argument against what you're saying, which is that a reflow oven would nearly never be used.
481316809616828923904hon1nbo2020-07-14T15:09:20.9790000-05:00no one has said a reflow oven would never be used
482300084800373391361slinkygn2020-07-14T15:09:30.3530000-05:00Did you notice the emoji attached to that claim too? Or are you intentionally being obtuse.
483316809616828923904hon1nbo2020-07-14T15:09:31.7150000-05:00the statement has always been said "conveyor" system

506316809616828923904hon1nbo2020-07-14T15:13:22.2630000-05:00and like we've said, we have no use for the large machine. we've never said we do zero reflow work or it's not useful to have at all
507300084800373391361slinkygn2020-07-14T15:13:25.3180000-05:00I could quote the entire thing, if you like. Or you could just reread it.
508300084800373391361slinkygn2020-07-14T15:13:29.3400000-05:00Of course we don't.
509316809616828923904hon1nbo2020-07-14T15:13:31.7980000-05:00but to say we can justify a large commercial unit is just laughable

530300084800373391361slinkygn2020-07-14T15:17:31.5970000-05:00Sorry, that wasn't Jim. Speed reading.
531540021655909695488michaelb52502020-07-14T15:17:33.8750000-05:00We have 3 or 4 people teaching the Haas right now.
532540021655909695488michaelb52502020-07-14T15:17:42.4950000-05:00You really need to chill until you get up to date.
533300084800373391361slinkygn2020-07-14T15:18:50.6330000-05:00Trust me, the one putting in emoji and Crock Dundee memes didn't need to chill. Then, anyway. Because he wasn't seriously advocating for a tool that would literally take up half of E-lab to be brought in.
534300084800373391361slinkygn2020-07-14T15:19:45.9260000-05:00And if anyone unclear on obviously sardonic statements had, say, *asked if I was serious* instead of presuming a call to war and overstating their case, this would certainly have been avoided.
535300084800373391361slinkygn2020-07-14T15:20:37.0160000-05:00Maybe a class on 3d printing paste screens based off kicad plans is what's needed here. Who knows.

538300084800373391361slinkygn2020-07-14T15:21:20.5620000-05:00@yashsedai I think I found your low orbital ion cannon when I found who shot Crocodile Dundee.
539316809616828923904hon1nbo2020-07-14T15:21:23.7710000-05:00*metaphorically; it would not literally take up half the e-lab and yet kept justifying how it would get more use than the haas, clearly showing a lack of understanding on how our tools are used, claiming the haas doesn't have teachers. Like you keep justifying the machine, yet claiming you're just being sarcastic (sorry, couldn't resist chiming back in. really wish I had some popcorn here)

542300084800373391361slinkygn2020-07-14T15:22:03.5370000-05:00I never justified how it would get more use than the HAAS, even.

550300084800373391361slinkygn2020-07-14T15:22:59.4600000-05:00My suggestion was a joke. You treated it as not a joke, and in that process said nobody would use a reflow oven. I disagreed.

564300084800373391361slinkygn2020-07-14T15:26:06.4830000-05:00That would be part of my serious non-joking discussion that I asked in that text you may have read.
565300084800373391361slinkygn2020-07-14T15:27:33.3390000-05:00The actual reflow oven I discussed seriously, because I'd actually use it. (You can tell because, y'know, no laughing emoji or memes of 90s movies.)
566316809616828923904hon1nbo2020-07-14T15:27:52.8100000-05:00we have an oven; @michaelb and I both agree it is the right size for what we need and it doesn't make sense to get a bigger one. Then someone comes along and says we should get it because it's way nicer. Argues that it would get more users than the haas, justifies it like comparing the haas to x-carve, pretends they know how many people actually use the haas, when we keep saying it doesn't make sense to use a commercial sized oven for one board / hobby scales goes into arguments about how the hot air tools get used etc and that's justification, then claims it was all a joke despite not just backing out of the discussion earlier I think that's enough of a tl;dr. thanks for the reminder @michaelb I'm technically still on the clock
567316809616828923904hon1nbo2020-07-14T15:29:03.1930000-05:00start of the seriousness and not a joke was clearly here: > Comparing an ETS conveyor machine to a T962A is comparing a Haas to (edit) an X-carve @slinkygn (George)
568300084800373391361slinkygn2020-07-14T15:29:25.8970000-05:00I can show you the AD search I performed. Not that I think it's relevant. I appreciate your outlining your perception of what happened. 569300084800373391361slinkygn2020-07-14T15:29:39.1510000-05:00That was LITERALLY POSTED WITH THE MEME
570316809616828923904hon1nbo2020-07-14T15:29:49.9750000-05:00dude, you kept digging your heels in

573300084800373391361slinkygn2020-07-14T15:30:15.2190000-05:00I posted that statement with the meme. That was a JOKE.
574316809616828923904hon1nbo2020-07-14T15:30:17.1430000-05:00if you left it at the original lines that would have been one thing, but then you posted that
575316809616828923904hon1nbo2020-07-14T15:30:19.3360000-05:00and it kept going
576300084800373391361slinkygn2020-07-14T15:30:39.9010000-05:00You called that the "start of the seriousness"
577316809616828923904hon1nbo2020-07-14T15:30:52.0510000-05:00"slinkygn: Comparing an ETS conveyor machine to a T962A is comparing a Haas to (edit) an X-carve(edited) [12:30 PM] michaelb: I mean those are indeed two CNCs [12:31 PM] michaelb: Purchasing a Haas when you don't even use your X-carve is a pretty big waste of money. 578300084800373391361slinkygn2020-07-14T15:30:52.8530000-05:00Acknowledging that everything before that was clearly not serious
579300084800373391361slinkygn2020-07-14T15:31:27.8130000-05:00So, basically, for you the transition from non-serious to serious, again, included a movie meme and little else.
580316809616828923904hon1nbo2020-07-14T15:31:32.4440000-05:00whatever; I'm muting the channel now

582300084800373391361slinkygn2020-07-14T15:31:38.5150000-05:00That is the flying off the cuff I'm referring to.
583300084800373391361slinkygn2020-07-14T15:31:54.8360000-05:00That's fine. You've clarified what you perceived. I appreciate it.
584300084800373391361slinkygn2020-07-14T15:34:55.5560000-05:00And that your thought it started with my line about the HAAS and X-carve vs big and little oven. Instead of the following line - "Purchasing a HAAS when you don't even use your x-carve..." Remember 5m ago when you said nobody had said a reflow oven wouldn't be used, even the small one? As a response to my saying that is what I disagreed with and put forth an argument for?
585300084800373391361slinkygn2020-07-14T15:35:07.6770000-05:00Like I said. Thanks for clarifying.

636207721887067799562aesthetys2020-08-01T19:48:31.8010000-05:00Newbie here. If I try to build this, am I likely to die? https://mad-science.wonderhowto.com/how-to/turn-microwave-oven-transformer-into-high-amperage-metal-melter-0140772/
637207721887067799562aesthetys2020-08-01T19:48:50.9160000-05:00I'm good at following instructions though
638207721887067799562aesthetys2020-08-01T19:49:21.8470000-05:00I need a forge to do blacksmithing and this looks like a cheap way to get something that works...assuming I don't kill myself with it.
639207721887067799562aesthetys2020-08-01T19:50:55.3320000-05:00If it's okay to build, I have a follow-up question: can that eye hole there be made bigger so I can insert a bigger metal stock?
640194641296529424386canibalcrab2020-08-01T19:58:13.8750000-05:00Honestly you can get a hellfire forge that uses propane for 150-200
641194641296529424386canibalcrab2020-08-01T19:58:36.1160000-05:00Using a microwave just seems like a bad idea

648547106163842613259nullinterface2020-08-13T11:44:35.6110000-05:00of interest since I've had a hankering to do large powerbanks and DIY powerwalls but pretty much none of the builds I've seen do much to account for the possibility of overheating, thermal runaway, or fire suppression
649547106163842613259nullinterface2020-08-13T11:46:01.9160000-05:00cheapest way I can think of to handle such possibilities for the homeowner on a small scale is to simply *bury* their DIY powerwall and make some arrangements for any overpressure from outgassing or fire to vent to atmosphere
650540021655909695488michaelb52502020-08-14T19:28:18.0110000-05:00Anyone here been going through the Tanner's donation pile?
651540021655909695488michaelb52502020-08-14T19:29:04.7260000-05:00I'm hoping to find some very basic 7-segment mV meters, like 0-50 or 0-100mV, panel mount. They're everywhere on Amazon just figured he mightve had some.

654540021655909695488michaelb52502020-08-18T11:24:02.1650000-05:00It feels like exactly the type of thing that Tanner's would've had a styrofoam tray of sitting around, but is also likely to have been bought up by someone when closing. Either way, Art picked some up for me at Newark for not too much money.
655189645236908064768themitch222020-08-18T12:15:48.8710000-05:00they also didn't have cool stuff like nixie tubes. I would love to see if any adafruit stuff made it to those bins
656188482200658903040skyspook2020-08-18T12:16:35.1220000-05:00Sounds like some inventory needs to be done

660540021655909695488michaelb52502020-08-18T12:20:21.5310000-05:00That being said, electronics does love to sit on piles and piles and loosely sorted junk 🤣😂 (1)

666316809616828923904hon1nbo2020-08-18T14:19:33.6590000-05:00^^ this I liked the idea of taking donations from them, but they needed to be more discriminatory about what they take in
667188482200658903040skyspook2020-08-18T14:21:53.4910000-05:00I can volunteer to go through it. I'm pretty brutal about tossing stuff -- though if it's just me it'll take a while.
668488485682184978442yashsedai2020-08-18T14:22:23.6990000-05:00I propose that we order a dumpster, take all the bins, throw contents in said dumpster, tell everyone the dumpster will be gone in one week, let the chips fall as they may, one condition, nothing comes back in the building

674178754956168265740malcolmputer2020-08-18T14:40:46.3870000-05:00I set up a google doc with the inventory in sheets, set up some basic categories, and Art and I went through about 10% of the inventory as a test to see how the sheet works.
675178754956168265740malcolmputer2020-08-18T14:42:12.3400000-05:00We took down info such as the following:

677178754956168265740malcolmputer2020-08-18T14:42:26.2100000-05:00and of course it's sortable etc.
678178754956168265740malcolmputer2020-08-18T14:43:18.2550000-05:00The plan was once we had inventoried everything we would start deciding how to bundle for sale/giveaway/whatever is legal with DMS and what to keep as a honor system donation style things for DMS elab.👍 (3)
679540021655909695488michaelb52502020-08-18T14:43:48.1900000-05:00dumb question: was there a mechanism for locating items in the room?
680178754956168265740malcolmputer2020-08-18T14:44:01.8970000-05:00Bin number, that's the first row in the above paste.
681178754956168265740malcolmputer2020-08-18T14:44:25.0580000-05:00We got through bins 1-12 out of ~120.
682178754956168265740malcolmputer2020-08-18T14:45:58.4910000-05:00All of the bins have a small sharpie marked number on the bin and the bin lid to make sure we don't confuse them by moving them around.
683188482200658903040skyspook2020-08-18T14:49:08.1920000-05:00Rock on 🙂
684178754956168265740malcolmputer2020-08-18T14:49:52.3540000-05:00@Skyspook I'm sure Art would be happy to have another volunteer to help him with the bins. I set up the sheet, the categories, but let him know that it was back in his court as my work stuff picked back up.
685300080747673288704kenpurcell2020-08-18T16:13:39.3150000-05:00A searchable spreadsheet is ideal.
686178754956168265740malcolmputer2020-08-18T17:26:19.4090000-05:00It is searchable, and more importantly filterable. You could for instance, filter to relays, and then sort high to low by quantity, and if you wanted to filter by AC or DC and then search by max V or A you could.
687300084800373391361slinkygn2020-08-19T00:56:33.2100000-05:00@malcolmputer link to the Google doc, by chance?
688189645236908064768themitch222020-08-19T01:47:01.7770000-05:00Are the parts from tanners free for all or someone gets first dibs?
689300080747673288704kenpurcell2020-08-19T08:30:50.3610000-05:00Traditionally they have been free to use in projects, not just free to take for your home stock pile. I guess determine DMS's use first, then members use and then enough for free to take.
690300080747673288704kenpurcell2020-08-19T08:31:18.9120000-05:00That may change depending on how long the take up orange
691194641296529424386canibalcrab2020-08-19T09:17:18.7490000-05:00But electronics has to sort the donation before anyone can go taking stuff

693178754956168265740malcolmputer2020-08-19T09:33:48.5810000-05:00The electronics are not free, keep your mitts to yourself until @artg_dms says otherwise.
694540021655909695488michaelb52502020-08-19T09:37:41.5990000-05:00Is there an active effort to sort it? Like days set up or people being recruited? Art didn't say anything at the last committee meeting, he mentioned other stuff like amateur radio and mouser donations
695540021655909695488michaelb52502020-08-19T09:39:49.4920000-05:00I guess where I'm concerned is that electronics has a history of hoarding things, and now an entire classroom is tied up with crates of stuff, people are told not to touch, and it seems like the committee is fine just letting it sit there.
696403764287975325697brsims24062020-08-19T09:41:02.8500000-05:00You aren't the only one with those concerns. I pinged Art about it this morning.
697300084800373391361slinkygn2020-08-19T09:51:41.7850000-05:00> @slinkygn (George) @artg_dms is the owner of the sheet, I think he's only giving it to people who volunteer to sort in the short term at least. @malcolmputer I'd volunteer to sort. It'd be more productive than the time I spent sorting the old piles and piles of components. :)

775547106163842613259nullinterface2020-11-21T17:59:58.2560000-06:00Chart isn't the most self-explanatory, but the peak values for 18650/21700/26650 are distinct high-density/high-current cells, thus the "synthetic C" value is a fiction for the sake of metrics to work against possible 46800 values

803189645236908064768themitch222021-03-07T17:04:41.7510000-06:00The SBUS protocol uses an inverted serial logic with a baud rate of 100000, 8 data bits, even parity, and 2 stop bits. The SBUS packet is 25 bytes long consisting of: Byte[0]: SBUS header, 0x0F Byte[1 -22]: 16 servo channels, 11 bits each Byte[23] Bit 7: channel 17 (0x80) Bit 6: channel 18 (0x40) Bit 5: frame lost (0x20) Bit 4: failsafe activated (0x10) Byte[24]: SBUS footer

806189645236908064768themitch222021-03-07T17:07:25.5040000-06:00The library as far as I understand, sets up UART with 100,000 baud, I don't know if it assumes the signal is inverted, that's easy enough to do with a transistor but I still don't know how this library works
807188482200658903040skyspook2021-03-07T17:46:39.4400000-06:00Given it's using the UART library, and I don't see any inverting of bits going on, I'd say that all of the voltages are going to be non-inverted. There is an invert parameter you can pass to the init function, I believe that should invert the logic for you
808188482200658903040skyspook2021-03-07T17:49:49.2550000-06:00I assume you'd be looking for invert = (UART.INV_RX | UART.INV_TX)
809189645236908064768themitch222021-03-07T17:50:17.2270000-06:00Is that for C or micropython?
810189645236908064768themitch222021-03-07T17:50:43.9310000-06:00the pico doesn't seem to match the micropython documentation
811189645236908064768themitch222021-03-07T21:50:04.2840000-06:00Sooo the micropython app works. And confirmed with my o-scope that it is a 0v low 3.3v high signal so it should read as UART
812188482200658903040skyspook2021-03-07T22:17:08.8070000-06:00Yea, sorry, I eas just reading the micropython docs. So the app works... But the controller isn't responding? Or is it celebration time?
813189645236908064768themitch222021-03-07T23:10:18.5040000-06:00The Pico is running the program correctly (print commands returning values) but the UART data isn't correct
814189645236908064768themitch222021-03-07T23:10:52.6540000-06:00I think its the pi pico UART implementation that's the issue
815189645236908064768themitch222021-03-07T23:11:00.6000000-06:00I can try it with an esp32 maybe
816189645236908064768themitch222021-03-08T01:21:55.9360000-06:00Well I had UART wrong. I do need to invert the signal after all.

833189645236908064768themitch222021-06-27T15:12:24.9280000-05:00It would be really cool if it actually used discrete component circuitry like the clock in Tanners.

835547106163842613259nullinterface2021-07-02T09:22:48.7960000-05:00Utility installed new transformers in my neighborhood and I find the ratings on them confusing - 75KVA and 50KVA. In my mind that's basically 75kW and 50kW respectively, which seems awfully small when the 150A panel in my house can theoretically draw 36kW and each transformer serves something like 5-8 structures.
836547106163842613259nullinterface2021-07-02T09:24:06.5180000-05:00Also they're stamped 7200V, which - assuming KVA = kW - for a 50kVA unit would be <7A on the supply side
837188482200658903040skyspook2021-07-02T09:30:38.2470000-05:00Rating is in kVA cause of power factors and how the loading works. Could be less or more in wattage than that rating. But also, yes, if everyone were to go to max on everything, you may blow the transformer. Watched it happen once, pretty display...
838188482200658903040skyspook2021-07-02T09:31:18.3280000-05:00This explains it with the math a bit https://www.electricaltechnology.org/2012/02/why-transformer-rating-in-kva-not-in-kw.html/amp
839547106163842613259nullinterface2021-07-02T09:32:47.1190000-05:00I assumed it has something to do with the heat load it can handle and less the power delivery
840547106163842613259nullinterface2021-07-02T09:35:41.5460000-05:00because it's hard to imagine it being limited to 50kW net delivery
841547106163842613259nullinterface2021-07-02T09:42:22.4040000-05:00of course, reality is that big motors - like HVAC compressors - only pull peak startup loads for a second or so and generally don't all start at once after a blackout
842540021655909695488michaelb52502021-07-02T10:48:55.6620000-05:00Odds are those few houses really are limited to 50kVA continuous. They probably looked at what loads those houses had been using in the past, along with some knowledge of what an average house uses, and decided 50kVA was fine. There's likely some wiggle room for overloads like maybe 1 hour at 55 or 60kVA.
843547106163842613259nullinterface2021-07-02T10:49:29.5600000-05:00can probably handle brief loads well in excess of that?
844540021655909695488michaelb52502021-07-02T10:50:31.5370000-05:00Yeah, probably. It's mostly a heat thing, so the thermal mass of the all the steel in the transformer gives it some overload capability.
845547106163842613259nullinterface2021-07-02T10:50:40.0280000-05:00i.e. anyone on an analog thermostat probably had their HVAC units all restart within a second of power being restored after the replacement was re-energized
846540021655909695488michaelb52502021-07-02T10:53:10.3760000-05:00I'd be surprised if those types of surges we _not_ a factor in designing the transformer.
847547106163842613259nullinterface2021-07-02T10:53:14.4430000-05:00just weird that with EV's coming down the pipe they didn't plan ahead
848547106163842613259nullinterface2021-07-02T10:53:51.6030000-05:00and possibly in another decade or so heat pumps starting to displace gas furnaces
849540021655909695488michaelb52502021-07-02T10:54:59.7090000-05:00Hopefully by the time EVs are that prevalent, they can stagger their charge times or something equally clever to reduce peak loading.
850547106163842613259nullinterface2021-07-02T10:55:58.2610000-05:00Ford is throwing brute force at the problem with the F150 lighting - that's going to be an *immense* battery pack
851547106163842613259nullinterface2021-07-02T10:56:36.4450000-05:00I imagine much of the expense of the re-engineering in my 'hood was the installation of new conduits / conductors between transformers
852547106163842613259nullinterface2021-07-02T10:57:00.7160000-05:00if they need to upgrade transformers that's probably a one-day project

875639481621443248138.madcoder2021-10-23T01:54:15.0220000-05:00HDMI input -> CSI. Plugs directly into a Pi. Alternative would be a USB capture device.

There are some USB pads that can interact with some software that I've used in the past, but most of them aren't very good - especially if you want like an automatic way to increment IDs or pull from a DB or something.

897115183069555589125aceat642021-11-29T19:03:20.5930000-06:00Anyone have suggestions on what I could do with some leftover LiFePO4 cells? After I've built my 48v 16S battery I should have 6 cells leftover if none are DOA. Do I make a 12v 4S? 19V 6S? A 12v 4S and a 6v 2S?? These are 280Ah cells too, so they aren't exactly small 😅

902115183069555589125aceat642021-11-29T22:06:19.3360000-06:00so a crazy idea I had...

905115183069555589125aceat642021-11-29T22:08:26.4430000-06:00now I just need a lorawan project lol
906300080747673288704kenpurcell2021-11-30T08:38:10.8450000-06:00That idea could apply to many things like an ESP32 Cam for a trailcam. For me temp/humidity of a greenhouse or weather station.
907300080747673288704kenpurcell2021-11-30T08:48:16.5450000-06:00Did you build packs with full on BMS? Was thinking a custom car jumper pack would be cool. It could live in the back of the SUV plugged into the remote cigarette lighter and be ready to go for anything. Charge phones & laptops, power lights, etc. The premade ones really suck!

927115183069555589125aceat642021-12-10T15:04:02.4740000-06:00Is a 0.3v drop pretty normal or should I be using larger than 12awg wires? That's like 6W of loss I think
928188482200658903040skyspook2021-12-10T15:08:36.5680000-06:00Bigger is better
929188482200658903040skyspook2021-12-10T15:09:18.3590000-06:00Might want to make sure it's actually 12awg and really copper - lots of fake wiring out there unfortunately
930540021655909695488michaelb52502021-12-10T15:09:25.5840000-06:00You'll get a more accurate check of drop in the wires by measuring the voltage across the wire itself, in the mV setting. I usually wouldn't trust the last digit of a meter. If 6W is too much loss for you then yeah go bigger but as long the insulation isn't getting soft and you don't smell it you shouldn't have major issues. There's also no harm going bigger.
931115183069555589125aceat642021-12-10T15:10:12.2840000-06:00It's legit wire (GXL), I bought from a trusted source :)
932115183069555589125aceat642021-12-10T15:10:51.7760000-06:00The wires are just barely warmer than ambient, so I'm not too worried on that front.
933115183069555589125aceat642021-12-10T15:11:23.4550000-06:00Guess I'll see if I have any lugs that would work with my 8awg GXL and these posts

935540021655909695488michaelb52502021-12-10T15:12:06.2930000-06:00Usually they're set up for a max voltage drop of 5% or something

941115183069555589125aceat642021-12-10T15:14:35.1980000-06:00Though I guess that's not terribly crazy for a 5kw inverter

944540021655909695488michaelb52502021-12-10T15:17:04.3390000-06:00Most of the time if we need 2/0 at work, we'll spec a pair of smaller wires in parallel instead.
945115183069555589125aceat642021-12-10T15:22:39.1900000-06:00Thankfully I don't have to run the wires far, since the battery will be right under the inverter

948300080747673288704kenpurcell2021-12-10T15:38:25.6950000-06:00There is a ESR meter in the eLab if you want super low resistance readings.
949609192307341918238mstovenour2021-12-10T19:01:06.8050000-06:00Does your BMS have low voltage cutoff? Given that you are using LiPo I'd assume so but just checking because we nearly burned down a lab because the battery plant didn't have low voltage cutoff. The power supplies are basically constant power output so as the battery voltage drops the input current goes up (toward infinity). The battery plant melted all the insulation off the 2/0 wires we used as the battery voltage dipped toward zero.
950609192307341918238mstovenour2021-12-10T19:01:49.2620000-06:00you can also just use a breaker to trip as the battery current approaches the safety limit of your wires.
951115183069555589125aceat642021-12-10T19:10:54.7020000-06:00it's LiFePO4 cells, so they're a good bit safer thankfully, but I am using a pretty nice BMS that covers pretty much everything

954115183069555589125aceat642021-12-10T19:13:44.5830000-06:00I may end up putting a small microcontoller between them to tell the inverter/charger to stop whenever the BMS calls for it, so I don't have to rely on just the mosfets of the BMS (it can disable charge and discharge independently)

980316809616828923904hon1nbo2022-03-12T22:46:58.0170000-06:00I was on the fence and ultimately didn't since I'd been burned by too many projects that didn't deliver👍 (1)
981316809616828923904hon1nbo2022-03-12T22:47:02.5320000-06:00Can't wait to see how they do
982190945022399610890timooni2022-03-13T11:07:14.4350000-05:00How unrealistic would it be for a complete beginner like myself to attempt to reflow and test repairing my dead graphics card? Like, it sounds like something that is way over my head, but they're absurdly pricy right now... Or is it something where, if it dies of "old age," it's just beyond repair?
983190945022399610890timooni2022-03-13T11:08:45.1270000-05:00Like I'd have no idea where to begin, how to test and find the fault on a bench without going back and forth with my computer, I know how to solder things ofc... Or does it have a microchip on it, that would make things kinda impossible if that was the part causing the issue lol
984190945022399610890timooni2022-03-13T11:10:23.5310000-05:00On the surface it seems like something really impractical but, I thought what the heck, maybe it's actually not and I just wouldn't have the experience to know if it's not impractical
98597341415431892992jsnowfreedman2022-03-14T21:30:10.0750000-05:00If you don't know what's wrong... It's fairly impractical. There are so many components that could be wrong with it I thought it would be really really difficult to just kind of check everything. If you have an idea on what the issue might be, or if you're aware of some well-known problems like capacitors failing or something.... Those might be easier to actually fix yourself. But unless you have like schematics and a lot of resources... And also have a working board preferably... And better yet a actual PCIe test station or something.... It would be difficult

1029189645236908064768themitch222022-08-24T09:36:20.1710000-05:00Most of the time I thought they stacked two cr2016 to get 6v instead of 3v, no need for a boost circuit.
1030547106163842613259nullinterface2022-08-25T17:13:28.5730000-05:00indeed, however this is an irritation to the user since 2016s effectively cost the same as 2032s. and I've had at least one device that claimed to use 2x2016 or 1x2032 that did not function with the latter.

1033831714763201445929ish074902022-11-14T11:51:16.0290000-06:00Hello all, I have a question. Im a novice when it comes to electronic, but Im about to tackle making an led sign. Ill be wiring in several different LED strips, Im trying to determine is there an advantage/ disadvanted to wirining them in parallel vs serial? If I can, Id like to avoid having to solder both sides of the LED. Any advice would help me a lot. Thank you
1034300080747673288704kenpurcell2022-11-14T15:21:04.9620000-06:00The determination on wether to use serial, parallel or serial/parallel is what is the source voltage you want to drive your LED sign from. The forward voltage drop of most high efficiency LEDs is 2.2 volts. So if your using 12 volts (actually 13.8V) from a car, so it is pretty simple to put 5-6 LEDs in series. Here is a pretty good guide http://dangerousprototypes.com/docs/Basic_Light_Emitting_Diode_guide👍 (1)
1035788814313930096662SlashBot#25662022-11-14T16:48:20.2930000-06:00
1036479414501331042307tjs32022-11-15T10:06:06.2370000-06:00(you said LED sign, so I'm assuming individual control... if they are all the same color this may not apply)... For individually addressable LED strips the power is normally paralleled. Stable power is important. Small installations can have a single power connection but for anything larger I normally splice in power every few feet to keep it robust. Control signals go into 1 end of each strip of lights... and can come out the other end to daisy chain to the next strip (or you can start a new chain from your controller if that's easier)👍 (2)

1038300080747673288704kenpurcell2022-11-16T16:07:05.0840000-06:00Are they individually addressable LEDs or just single color strips?

I have a Gaggia Classic Pro that I want to install a PID mod for, and ideally play with Gagguino. My electronics skills are a bit rusty, I'd love some help in exchange for helping in any software / cybersecurity projects you may have! If anyone is up for that, I'm planning to come to the space during the weekend (Fri / Sat) and bring everything, so let me know if you feel like joining 🙂
