I have a question regarding class fees. Science is planning a 3 part class. We want to charge different fees for members and non-members. Is there a way to do that with the existing calendar system?

[5/2/2017 8:37 PM] canibalcrab

Yeah we used to have it set up where you could charge whatever you want for a class. But the DMS would get 10% etc
[5/3/2017 1:19 AM] bill4934

No, same fees for everybody. What's wrong with Talk?

[5/3/2017 1:22 AM] canibalcrab

Are you thinking of doing a fee based on % of $ taken in class? Or just a flat fee per class regardless of free or paid class?
[5/3/2017 4:23 AM] bill4934
The web site mentions a discount on some classes for members; that may be what she is proposing.
[5/3/2017 1:07 PM] ashley_newland8586
We want to be able to charge members a discounted rate. So if you are a member you only pay $50 but if you aren't a member you pay more
[5/3/2017 1:07 PM] alerho
So @Ashley_Newland you can create a class for members only but in the description have an eventbrite link for non members. It's not ideal but with the current system that is the only way I see it working. There are some gotchas. You won't be able to truely limit people. So if you only have 5 spots and 5 people buy eventbrite and 5 members buy tickets, that's an issue.
[5/3/2017 1:08 PM] alerho
The non members will also see the member price listed in the event but that's not a big deal.

When this calendar system started finance wanted as little work to go through them so that is why it is the way it is. It's filled with compromise from finance and classroom at the time. I hope that before other items are added to the calendar that they think about how it will effect finance and other volunteers.

At our Digital Media Committee, several members brought up "Opencast" and question of which committee was working on setting it up or improving it. We agreed that the DM committee will not be focusing on opencast at the moment, so we wanted to pass that message along 😀

What the calendar. Since classes are taught by volunteers and they typically won't commit to teaching a class more than 3 weeks out (usually 12 days) they don't appear till 10-14 days out. Nature of the beast. It would be nie if classes in queue were read only for everybody except the auditors.

Each committee sets the rules on training and verification.

The problem on general certifications, like welding or woodshop, is the time and toll on our volunteers. They need to be compensated for making the trip and setting time aside to teach or verify.

No doubt we have talented, skillful new members join. We still have to show, as you said Daniel, the particulars of our set up, maintenance, safety, and rules.

@Denzuko.sdf.org ... I have created a permanent "development" branch on the GitHub Calendar
All, development should be merged into there first. Then once it is has been QAed and ready for production, then merged into master. Master needs to stay pristine. Also, this allows the development branch to be CIed into a different domain for everyone to play with.

@john a gorman Got a potential volunteer instructor that I'd like to introduce to the space. He'll be heading up classes on CompTIA related course and be a regular contact for the VCC Instructor pool. Think you got time to meet with him?

random thought, but how well do we explain to our teachers than they can charge for classes (and keep the proceeds)?
[5/16/2019 2:10 PM] aceat64
might be a win-win for many of the more prolific teachers to charge $10-15/student
[5/16/2019 2:11 PM] aceat64
paradoxically, charging for classes can often _increase_ the number of students who want to take the class, because of the perception of value
[5/16/2019 2:39 PM] lavarocks.
Do you mean solely through Eventbrite?
[5/16/2019 2:40 PM] aceat64
yeah, I think the calendar software has that integrated
[5/16/2019 2:41 PM] lavarocks.
You pay a fee through Eventbrite and then you would only make $10/15 for an hour and a half- that’s minimum wage.
[5/16/2019 2:42 PM] aceat64
I think there's a miscommunication here, I'm saying the teacher could charge per student $10-15 (or more if it's a very highly valued class)
[5/16/2019 2:42 PM] lavarocks.
Ah.
[5/16/2019 2:42 PM] aceat64
at $10/student, a class with 6 students nets the teacher more money, regardless of length
[5/16/2019 2:44 PM] lavarocks.
We did discuss at the last chair vice chair meeting really needing to address the dated software and possibly request to pay for a new calendar system that could integrate Eventbrite AND meetup to bring in new members. I believe Eventbrite has a pretty big fee per payment
[5/16/2019 2:44 PM] aceat64
looks like Eventbrite is 3.5% + $1.79 per ticket
[5/16/2019 2:45 PM] aceat64
we might be able to negotiate a better rate as a non-profit
[5/16/2019 2:46 PM] lavarocks.
I tried it once and wasn’t a fan. Is there anything else out there like it?
[5/16/2019 2:47 PM] aceat64
probably, the other option is just tying the calendar software into a CC processor, though we'd end up being the middle man for processing the payments to the teacher
[5/16/2019 2:48 PM] aceat64
services like Stripe are fairly straightforward to use from an programming standpoint, we'd have to hash out the financial workflow
[5/16/2019 2:48 PM] aceat64
their rate is 2.9% + $0.30 per transaction
[5/16/2019 2:49 PM] aceat64
(might be lower for non-profits)
[5/16/2019 2:49 PM] aceat64
looks like 2.2% for non-profit
[5/16/2019 2:51 PM] aceat64
at eventbrite's pricing a $10 gets the teacher $7.86 after fees, at $15 that's $12.68
[5/16/2019 2:52 PM] aceat64
so $15/student breakeven with honorarium is at 4 students
[5/16/2019 2:53 PM] aceat64
any teacher with classes regularly over 4 students should really think about charging $15/head
[5/16/2019 2:54 PM] aceat64
example, a 10 student class that paid $15/student is $126.80 for the teacher
[5/16/2019 2:55 PM] doug.emes
Your assuming the free loving as in free beer students will choose to pay. That's a huge assumption. The takeaway/proj classes where you pay for materials is usually under 10 and they don't fill
[5/16/2019 2:55 PM] aceat64
I think there's loads of people willing to pay for a class, at the right price point and class qualities
[5/16/2019 2:56 PM] doug.emes

Arguably those classes Arent being taught yet
[5/16/2019 2:56 PM] aceat64

perception of value is important, there's likely plenty of people who see a free class and don't go, because they think there's a catch

people view phones with metal and glass backs as "better" than the plastic ones, but arguably plastic is a better case material, it just looks/feels cheaper
[5/16/2019 3:01 PM] timooni
depends on the plastic
[5/16/2019 3:02 PM] timooni
plastic does scuff more and that looks ugly. form is important for some people's images. plastic can also crack. Metal and glass both smudge but they can be cleaned. Metal bends and gets hot but is good otherwise
[5/16/2019 3:02 PM] timooni

[5/16/2019 3:03 PM] timooni

iphone backglass is an abomination
[5/16/2019 3:03 PM] timooni

but samsung backglass is functional. It can crack. But you can easily take it off and put a new one on yourself for 15 bucks or less.

hmm another option, if we end up handling the processing directly, could be to have the classes free to members, but cost for non-members, but we still pay the teacher the same per head anyway
[5/16/2019 3:09 PM] aceat64
it would have to be balanced against various factors though
[5/16/2019 3:09 PM] aceat64
general idea would be to encourage non-members to become members, even if just for a class or two
[5/16/2019 3:09 PM] timooni

like an a la carte honorarium that non members would subsidize?

Guide to build a Group
I think we can do a lot to help people build a group of people, such as an Interest Group, Project Group, or even a Committee. I think some people lack confidence or think they will end up doing it all and it will be too much work. They also may not know how to really start...

@Apparently_Weird got with me about the New Member Handbook and I directed him to the committee drive. I had always meant to follow it up with a Committee Chair Handbook and a Teacher Handbook but seeing as how the New Member one was possibly a failure, I never did the others. If PR wants to give it a shot again the whole thing needs heavy updating bc we did it circa 2016 iirc.

I am working on a new member handbook, a brochure, and other things. JJ probably doesn't know that. as I began the discussions with James before the election (. Well, the new member thing was started in November, but the person who insisted on "helping me" never responded. And I did not feel empowered to move forward. But now, I'm six months older and jaded. So I empowered myself.

If it's collaboration you're after, the G-suite works pretty darned well for file hosting, etc. And if you can use Google Docs, et.al. for your creation, more power to you, because that brings extra-enhancy functionality to the collaboration process such as simultaneous editing, comments, etc. instead of having to ship files all over tarnation via email.
But if you're insistent on old-school file sharing, you can use "the committee drive" to accomplish similar tasks, just shipping short email requests around the globe rather than full-blown files.
all of which I presume you uns already know, but just in case, I thought it'd toss it out there...

[6/5/2019 11:23 AM] judykriehn3727

Well, first off, I hate google docs. Not so much interested in "collaboration" as in being able to share the file format I'm working in without standing on my left foot while whistling Also Sprach Zarathustra. Being 61 and cranky has it's limitations.

Preach on, sister! Hate google too. But when you're working with an org that already has it in place... (there's some expression about Romans or something...)
youuns do what works for you. Sometimes people are excited by what's already on tap. Sometimes, they'd rather bottle their own. No bother to me either way...

@denzuko-at-work I haven't seen the mame cabinet class write up but I assume it was rejected for being a "watch me work" kind or a workshop style class. Maybe a rewrite would help
[6/24/2019 6:01 PM] canibalcrab

Like another example would be 3d fab can't buy a cr10 and get honorarium for a "let's build a printer class"
[6/24/2019 6:02 PM] canibalcrab

Or better example, logistics couldn't have gotten one for the weld a table event

Unless you were teaching a practical class on how to weld and using the tables as an example and place for people to learn ... each person welds a leg for example

[6/24/2019 6:04 PM] canibalcrab

That would have been a welding class with the tables just as an opportunity. I'm just saying he might be able to resubmit. It should have had a reason. Or message the auditors

About this Event
We’ll be making a full size cabinet to be hosted in the Interactive Computer Museum which runs RetroPI. Why have a full size cabinet in VCC’s ICM? Because after getting a donation of a vintage 19" server computer case that can support multiple motherboards. Rackie McRack will be hosting several retro boards, (some in customized cases, some in drop in configurations) and we’re able to install a kvm switch which the Mame Cab will interface with.
To build one's own they must use the following shopping lists: https://www.amazon.com/ideas/amzn1.account.AFZSV7IEXCYVDTA2FUEEFMKZ3OCA/WCAR0BLRJ9XV?ref=idea_cp_vl_ov_d

Also, many web hosting providers have a way to send all emails that are not defined on the domain to one address. It comes in handy to be able to make up email addresses on the fly because all emails not defined go into your email.

@denzuko-at-work that regex is going to miss a *lot* of stuff. Heck, email addresses can even have multiple '@' characters that aren't a location reference.
Email basically allows any ASCII character to the left of the right-most '@' character. Validators aren't supposed to attempt to validate that.
As for someone gaming the system, they don't need to use the '+

If you want to make it complicated, you could use the text method and/or RFID scan method for members to verify that they are indeed real and only the real people could be counted for attendance .. But is this a real issue? I'm not convinced

I would say that if we are going to accuse someone of abusing the calendar or classrooms, we need to have some policy in place defining that

We do have *some* boundaries ... we have a tiered system of who gets the room ... and we have certain classes that are inappropriate ... this really needs to be discussed and proposed to the Education committee and get some classroom policy

His "acting / writing" classes
[9/6/2019 1:29 PM] draco_the_drake

I'm not certain that is actually part of our mission ...
[9/6/2019 1:30 PM] draco_the_drake
but it *may* be complementary to Digital Media
[9/6/2019 1:30 PM] canibalcrab
So everyone says a person can just ask him to move, but the population of the space is least likely to want to deal with that potential conflict of asking someone to inconvenience themselves by moving
[9/6/2019 1:30 PM] canibalcrab
That goes for any class
[9/6/2019 1:30 PM] draco_the_drake

Well, what should the policy be?

I don't believe we would ever actually remove a class when the schedule was full up, even if a better suited class showed up.

Wasn't there some kind of "waiting list" in the works?
Kinda like to see that for teaching space, too.
That might help us go "why has basket weaving been waiting for 2 weeks"?
"because it needs 35 seats, but the Interactive is always filled with Acting classes"
"Oh." "Let's fix that..."
Right now, we have no idea what, if anything, letting someone use this as personal studio space is displacing.
But, there I go, adding to the problems instead of offering any solutions

[9/6/2019 1:35 PM] yashsedai

From minutes: *"Will need to make a push to get the old printmaking room back."*
Is that currently in use as Logisitic's project storage purgatory, @pearce and @AGr?
[9/10/2019 9:31 AM] yashsedai

that is correct

[9/10/2019 9:32 AM] yashsedai

Why does education believe that they need the old printmaking room back?
[9/10/2019 9:34 AM] nullinterface

Presumably that Bad Plan™ of a sub-ceiling-height wall is going to be taken down, thus making that space part of the interactive room again

@doug.emes a little premature since we still need board approval, but we talked a bit about a training plan for the new epilog at the meeting.
We think the best thing is to do an online supplement, so if you've taken 101 or 102 you can watch some training content, maybe take a short quiz, and that clears you for the fusion. Does that sound possible?
