[4/8/2017 7:04 PM] danielh3680 Don't hold your breath! [4/8/2017 7:56 PM] canibalcrab When I posted in metal shop I was the first post since December [4/8/2017 10:48 PM] slunchery c-c-c-combo breaker [4/8/2017 11:01 PM] danielh3680 Hey, check out this expensive resistor I found! http://www.mouser.com/search/ProductDetail.aspx?R=0virtualkey0virtualkeyPTF5610K000TZEKv [4/8/2017 11:02 PM] danielh3680 A steal at only $12 per unit, it's a 0.01% 5ppm/C precision, low-noise job [4/16/2017 1:19 AM] tmc42423886 Not sure why, but I've joined now. Spent several hours at the space today. Finally got the new controller board hooked up to my 3D printer. [4/16/2017 1:29 AM] canibalcrab @tmc4242 because you arent afraid of change! [4/16/2017 1:29 AM] themitch22 Which controller board [4/16/2017 1:30 AM] tmc42423886 MKS-Sbase. Smoothieboard Chinese clone [4/16/2017 1:30 AM] themitch22 Yeah good board let me know how it works out [4/16/2017 1:32 AM] tmc42423886 @pearce - I detest change, especially change for the sake of change only. Hangouts is a better platform for my use. As previously noted. [4/16/2017 1:33 AM] tmc42423886 Will do Mitch. Have to actually get it to print something next. Hopefully the calibration phase won't be too bad. [4/16/2017 1:48 AM] canibalcrab @tmc4242 i assure you i didnt do it for the sake of change, sorry your work has it banned, but they probably did that to make sure you are working at work. if youd like to argue about the merits of it we can move to a PM or #general_chatter [4/16/2017 1:49 AM] tmc42423886 Nothing to argue about. I see no merit. Your comments about my work are not welcome either. [5/5/2017 1:44 PM] banditbingo yo anyone know a good way to reuse raspi heat sinks? [5/5/2017 1:45 PM] banditbingo I think my rpi1bs are crapping out after 3 years [5/5/2017 4:33 PM] raymond011905 Get some thermal tape to put them back on with... [5/5/2017 4:56 PM] banditbingo thanks [5/5/2017 4:57 PM] banditbingo @Raymond they sell that at micro centre? [5/5/2017 6:41 PM] raymond011905 i think tanner's will have it [5/5/2017 6:41 PM] raymond011905 if you would've asked yesterday i couldn't picked up some today in silicon valley before flying home tomorrow on a red-eye [5/5/2017 6:42 PM] raymond011905 but the store closes in 19 minutes and i'm across town from it [5/5/2017 6:43 PM] raymond011905 you can also find thermal adhesive in 2 part form but that's more permanent. fry's and micro center both carry that [5/6/2017 7:14 PM] banditbingo @Raymond is thermal pads the thing ur talking about that's permanent? [5/6/2017 7:15 PM] banditbingo that's what I'm buying at micro center. [5/6/2017 7:15 PM] banditbingo tanner doesn't have thermal tape [5/7/2017 10:11 AM] bendertx radioheads unite. where is everybody? on the roof? MC only carries the pads, thermal compound, or thermal adhesive 2-part epoxy mix. [5/8/2017 9:42 AM] raymond011905 they don't carry thermal tape that holds the heatsink on without screws/clamps [5/8/2017 11:20 AM] denzuko @Raymond that just remind me of https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-4gbBGWxt8Uk/WF52Qjr0JnI/AAAAAAAAByk/gp_PX0pDfr4sNooLks8pkbFGxII6HdemwCLcB/s1600/Groot.jpg {Embed} https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-4gbBGWxt8Uk/WF52Qjr0JnI/AAAAAAAAByk/gp_PX0pDfr4sNooLks8pkbFGxII6HdemwCLcB/s1600/Groot.jpg https://images-ext-1.discordapp.net/external/VqKuGjdcWbnPEJtduPayz-KVcZ87YP1QPcM39J7ss6E/https/1.bp.blogspot.com/-4gbBGWxt8Uk/WF52Qjr0JnI/AAAAAAAAByk/gp_PX0pDfr4sNooLks8pkbFGxII6HdemwCLcB/s1600/Groot.jpg [6/6/2017 11:59 AM] denzuko would anyone know of a good way to "short" two gpio pins in tiny package that will do the short/switch on a VCC pulse but does send a electric signal to either connector? [6/6/2017 12:00 PM] denzuko I'm thinking something like a very tiny relay of sorts, but not sure which parts and part number would work [6/7/2017 11:53 AM] denzuko maybe a mosfet would work? but how would one close the circuit so it acts more like a button? [6/8/2017 1:09 PM] darrent_ It sounds like you need a conversion from momentary switch behavior to latching behavior. [6/8/2017 1:09 PM] darrent_ http://www.mosaic-industries.com/embedded-systems/microcontroller-projects/electronic-circuits/push-button-switch-turn-on/latching-toggle-power-switch [6/8/2017 1:10 PM] darrent_ Figure 2 sounds like what you are wanting to do where the Power Input net and the Switched Power net are the GPIO lines that you wish to short together. [6/8/2017 6:50 PM] pogopadawan I'm looking for help with networking two Raspberry Pis via an Ad-Hoc network. Does anyone know who I could talk to about this? [6/8/2017 7:34 PM] canibalcrab @themitch22 [6/8/2017 7:49 PM] themitch22 @Denzuko.sdf.org [6/8/2017 9:46 PM] denzuko lol. yes I'm the resident IT/Linux/RPI guru @pogopadawan [6/8/2017 9:47 PM] denzuko so I guess you're doing this over WiFi? would you be using ipv4 or ipv6? [6/8/2017 9:48 PM] denzuko also, would you be using rasbian or arch? [6/8/2017 10:00 PM] pogopadawan Yes. I'm using ipv4 on raspbian. Currently I'm using project Byzantium to get a base working, but it doesn't give me as many options as I need. If you are here now I'm in the common area to talk more if needed. [6/12/2017 4:58 PM] darrent_ Left my water bottle in the room. Will pick up later this evening. [6/30/2017 7:10 PM] denzuko sorry @art I just found a spanner I was using in my pocket when I got home. Guess I had a brain fart or got destination. I'll be by this weekend to wrap up a few things on my back log so I'll bring it by and donate a little to your committee while I'm at it. [7/1/2017 11:36 AM] artg_dms8185 Thanks! [7/2/2017 2:06 AM] denzuko the spanner is right back at home in his drawer at the space. again sorry about that. is there anything pressing you guys are needing for the committee like tools or supplies? [7/2/2017 9:34 AM] artg_dms8185 At the moment no. Will be ordering in the near future. Need to do a walk around the Space to round up/return tools. If you run across tools w/ yellow on them, they probably need to be returned the ELab. [7/3/2017 7:25 AM] denzuko will do [7/5/2017 4:14 PM] Deleted User Can I power motors (4) rated at 4v each with a 5v 10a power supply [8/7/2017 5:38 PM] anandelamaran Just checking, is the 'Wavetek Model 143' Function generator working and available to use? I am planning to do some experiments this weekend so wanted to know before visiting the space. Thanks. [8/13/2017 2:09 PM] stark4machines Can I get someone's help on a Line 6 Delay Pedal? It's never been dropped or anything, but I assume it's a loose jack connection or something simple. It powers on and everything, but no audio. Any help would be greatly appreciated! (718) 795-3187 [4/13/2018 11:57 PM] kevpat As far as the expansion goes. May I suggest a computer test bench. [4/18/2018 7:16 PM] kevpat I got Ultra Violet & Side emitting LEDs coming for the Mouser sign. I think UV would look the cleanest. But having a colorful Bluetooth one where anyone could scan the bar code and play with different light configs on their phone would be fun also. Any opinions but anoying if its not on the outside of the wall. I suggest UV inside & Color RGB outside [4/19/2018 1:43 AM] blackfire_tx9040 Anyone want to try to repair a UPS? It has, appearantly, a bad charging board that was taken out. I modified the board to allow for an external fuse w/o success in fixing the board. I checked Tanners but they don't have one that large. Unless I missed it. [5/24/2018 6:04 PM] adam1334 Harbor Freight sells some of what I'll call midsize panels, but I think they're 12V. Maybe a camping store, but you're likely to pay out the nose for them as they'll be productized. [8/6/2018 12:05 PM] talkers @VenomV you can get a higher voltage panel (like 12v-24v) and a Buck convertor (<$10) to bring the voltage down to 9v [8/27/2018 8:28 AM] m9e Does anyone know who might sell a 40 position 1mm pitch ffc ribbon cable locally? [8/28/2018 3:45 PM] blameitontexas @VenomV I have a couple [9/25/2018 7:33 PM] emmathyst Dang I'm just catching up since I've been inactive for awhile [9/25/2018 7:33 PM] emmathyst That openPnP machine looks awesome [10/26/2018 1:10 PM] beren04342 i'm looking for a python tutor, bi-weekly, $20, 90 minute sessions [10/26/2018 1:25 PM] canibalcrab Yo. Let's not spam that any farther [12/14/2018 5:31 PM] timooni Hey, so I don't know if this was passed or if it was just being talked about [12/14/2018 5:33 PM] timooni but y'know that major victory for right to repair? Able to reverse engineer devices and software for the purposes of repair, in exception to any EULA / TOS / Copyright whatever [12/14/2018 5:33 PM] timooni for example, iphones / ipad DRM, john deere onboard computers, etc [12/14/2018 5:35 PM] timooni well i had this shower thought that this exception could be used for the development of repair techniques, or for larger groups to publish fixes for these devices so that as companies make the DRM more difficult to break, individuals don't have to reinvent the wheel. Larger groups can stay on top of it and make it easy. [12/14/2018 5:37 PM] timooni if it's legal for an individual to reverse engineer DRM to repair their device, is it also legal for a nonprofit to reverse engineer DRM for anyone to be able to repair the same device? I'd imagine so. If that's the case, we should totally do that. I think there are people here qualified to do stuff like that. OS cracking is, well, a science and art whoever has a ridiculous amount of free time and experience to crack it. also some phones on the lower end of the android are just flat out not worth cracking due to low specs that make it usefulles for just about anything outside manufacturer intended tasks? {Reactions} 💯 [1/20/2019 3:13 AM] dinkbatt sorry not trying to overly criticize, just providing a feasiblity assemsement [1/20/2019 3:14 AM] dinkbatt like i've definitely done like 3/4 of a comp sci degree and jailbrekaing is not something volunteer workers can just knock out in a few sittings. [1/31/2019 3:39 PM] timooni I see ok [3/3/2019 11:14 AM] randouser1 question, if you step down DC power with a buck converter... say a 12V 3A power supply to 5v with a buck converter rated for 3 amps [3/3/2019 11:14 AM] randouser1 do you get 5V 3A? [3/3/2019 11:15 AM] randouser1 curious as if stepping down power affects the available output current in any way [3/3/2019 11:20 AM] canibalcrab I'm pretty sure amps are pulled from the device using it [3/3/2019 11:20 AM] canibalcrab I don't play with buck/boosters though [3/3/2019 11:20 AM] randouser1 right, just curious if the available is still 3A [3/3/2019 11:20 AM] randouser1 say I have 3 fans that each require 1A [3/3/2019 11:21 AM] randouser1 if I step down 12v to 5V for the fans, can I still power those 3 fans [3/3/2019 11:21 AM] canibalcrab The booster should have it detailed on the spec right? I'm talking with my DPRG buddies and I think I might be able to implement a touch slide at best, or 2 touch buttons at worst for a mode up/down [4/9/2019 9:40 PM] doug.emes im digging into the 187 page guide now [4/10/2019 12:11 AM] canibalcrab im not totally sure i follow [4/10/2019 12:12 AM] canibalcrab actually im not even sure i know how the touch lamps work except that it has to be on a metal surface [4/10/2019 12:39 AM] doug.emes So on the nine dollar trinket board, it has 3 of the pins of the actual chip able to be used for capacitive touch . One of those is also the direct memory access pin for driving the neopixels. [4/10/2019 12:41 AM] doug.emes But that still leaves us another normal gpio pin for another selection. So in theory one cap touch can be mode up, and the other mode down [4/10/2019 12:42 AM] doug.emes I tried updating to circuit python 3.x but lost my code, but I had it at home still so tomorrow night I should be able to virtually start fresh [4/10/2019 12:42 AM] canibalcrab interesting. i think id only need one though since all the sides are soldered together [4/10/2019 12:43 AM] canibalcrab but making any of my stained glass stuff cap touch activated sounds awesome [4/10/2019 12:43 AM] doug.emes If we try a strip of copper tape or what not, I should in theory be able to make a slider but I need to do some trsting [4/10/2019 12:44 AM] doug.emes Anyways I've got the hankering to figure this out [4/10/2019 12:45 AM] canibalcrab youd have to figure out how to turn a single large surface into a slider, like maybe have it compare between the two pins connected to the same surface [4/10/2019 12:46 AM] doug.emes Yes [4/10/2019 11:08 AM] doug.emes Ok I determined my prior code wasn't on circuit python but in arduino... which I already know how to do cases, so should have something this coming weekend. [11/28/2019 8:16 PM] Deleted User Quick question [11/28/2019 8:19 PM] Deleted User I have an Arduino Uno with a relay shield. I connected the positive of an extension cord in series with the relay contacts on the board and everything works fine when I'm plugged into the computer. As soon as I remove the USB, and connect it to a 5v power supply (board standard), the relays won't fire. The LEDs for the relays fire...but the relays themselves don't fire...any ideas? [11/28/2019 8:25 PM] canibalcrab I believe the relay board needs its own power. The 5v from a USB won't be enough to power it [11/28/2019 8:42 PM] Deleted User But it powers off of the USB [11/28/2019 8:42 PM] Deleted User Wouldn't the 5v be stronger than the USB [11/28/2019 8:43 PM] canibalcrab USB is going to be 5v and .05 amp unless you have a powered usb [11/28/2019 8:43 PM] canibalcrab I'm thinking you don't have the amps [11/28/2019 8:44 PM] Deleted User hmm...okay...so how would I go about powering the shield seperately? [11/28/2019 8:44 PM] canibalcrab Wall wart? [11/28/2019 8:44 PM] Deleted User What's that? [11/28/2019 8:45 PM] Deleted User Oh I just looked it up [11/28/2019 8:46 PM] Deleted User So...there's a bunch of pinouts on the relay shield...correct me if I'm wrong, but wouldn't it need to input into the VCC and GND pinout? [11/28/2019 8:46 PM] canibalcrab In theory once you have more power it will work since the led worked. That means it got the right code [11/28/2019 8:48 PM] Deleted User hmmm [11/28/2019 8:48 PM] Deleted User So what would be the suggestion? There isn't a spot for a power supply in. [11/28/2019 8:49 PM] Deleted User not on the relay shield, anyway [11/28/2019 8:49 PM] canibalcrab Gonna drive home then I can send pics [11/28/2019 8:49 PM] Deleted User ok [11/28/2019 8:49 PM] Deleted User I'll send media in the meantime [11/28/2019 8:49 PM] canibalcrab What Arduino are you using [11/28/2019 8:50 PM] Deleted User uno [11/28/2019 8:51 PM] Deleted User {Attachments} https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/300062878676025344/649804547241410560/IMG_20191128_205006.jpg?ex=67b93ba4&is=67b7ea24&hm=61551ed803c097bd644d36f939ca10e9ea1acd2ae2f1edcee4426e64de03d1b4& https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/300062878676025344/649804548256563200/IMG_20191128_205018.jpg?ex=67b93ba5&is=67b7ea25&hm=2765632e5a7ea06121b8fc90f0c14f95da082727b8df2d034af24f702c0c471b& https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/300062878676025344/649804549120458782/IMG_20191128_205024.jpg?ex=67b93ba5&is=67b7ea25&hm=8f1872341d8c8535ab6192d539eb17b642bf40431d26f53edbd9551638a90553& [11/28/2019 9:25 PM] michaelb5250 @Deleted User you plugged 5v into the black DC jack? Or did you use a USB charger? [11/28/2019 9:36 PM] Deleted User Well that's where the change happened [11/28/2019 9:36 PM] Deleted User it works when I have it in USB [11/28/2019 9:36 PM] Deleted User when I plug in the jack, the relays don't fire [11/28/2019 9:47 PM] Deleted User and yes, 5v [11/28/2019 10:20 PM] michaelb5250 Few possibilities, where did you get the relay board from? [11/28/2019 10:21 PM] michaelb5250 And keep in mind that DC jack isn't actually designed for 5v, it's meant for like 7-12v iirc. They have a 5v regulator on it, sonif you give it exactly 5v the regulator cant regulate and behaves unexpectedly [11/28/2019 10:40 PM] Deleted User HMMMM OK [11/28/2019 10:40 PM] Deleted User sorry for the caps [11/28/2019 10:41 PM] Deleted User So, do I need to remove the regulator? [11/28/2019 10:41 PM] Deleted User or get a different power supply to handle the entire pinned out board [11/28/2019 11:28 PM] kevpat Well usb is 3.3v if it likes that. Feed it that [11/28/2019 11:33 PM] doug.emes USB has NEVER been 3.3, [11/29/2019 2:54 AM] talkers @Deleted User you should be good just using a USB cable and power adapter. USB is 5v. You really should not need a lot of amps for the relays. They are just magnetic switches. [11/29/2019 8:21 AM] Deleted User @john a gorman well that doesn't answer the issue at hand, which is that the relays won't fire, but the LED for the relay does. Makes no sense [11/29/2019 8:24 AM] talkers You were right that power isn't an issue if it works off the PC USB. As Pearce says, that's only 1/2 an amp [11/29/2019 8:24 AM] talkers I would look at the code [11/29/2019 8:46 AM] michaelb5250 Where'd you get the relay board? This really depends on where the board gets its power from (Arduino provides 5v, 3.3v, and 'Vin' pins on its headers) [11/29/2019 8:51 AM] talkers @michaelb the relay shield should be pulling power off the uno board [11/29/2019 8:51 AM] talkers So it will pull what it needs [11/29/2019 8:56 AM] michaelb5250 It matters which pin the relay board pulls from. [11/29/2019 8:57 AM] michaelb5250 By providing 5v to the DC jack, the VIN and 5v pins will hover around 4.5v, and the 3.3v will still be 3.3. [11/29/2019 8:57 AM] michaelb5250 So if it pulls power from 3.3v that's not the issue. If it's expecting 5v then it could have problems [11/29/2019 2:28 PM] hon1nbo What Michael said. The LED on the relay output may have enough power after the voltage drop, but the coil may not make an appropriate field strength. {Reactions} 👌 [11/29/2019 5:13 PM] Deleted User I mean the shield just stacks onto the Uno and pinouts all go through to the relay board [11/29/2019 5:13 PM] Deleted User So I'm not really sure. I'll grab my multi meter later and check it to see [11/29/2019 5:16 PM] michaelb5250 If you know who you bought it from they might have the schematic available [11/29/2019 5:17 PM] michaelb5250 But really the answer is find a 7-12v supply and try that. [11/29/2019 5:24 PM] Deleted User I mean it's an Arduino Uno and a Seeed Relay Shield [11/29/2019 5:31 PM] Deleted User But does that 7-12v power supply plug into the built in connector on the Uno? [11/29/2019 6:31 PM] michaelb5250 Yeah the 7-12v plugs into the black DC jack on the uno [11/29/2019 9:35 PM] Deleted User Ok cool thanks. I'll have to track that down. [1/17/2020 1:33 AM] denzuko5245 Random question, does one have to flash a fresh esp8266 esp01 or does the at command modes work out of the box with an ftdi board? Since the tubes are typically replaceable, they are commonly using Spade connectors. You can pull one pair and if it is the vertical scan done, otherwise replace spades and grab the other pair These units are fun, but unless you make a new driver for the X sweep you are limited in what you can do with it. [2/15/2020 2:12 PM] canibalcrab Crts are pretty easy to be careful with. There's one real big wire that attaches to the tube and transformer to watch out for [2/15/2020 5:31 PM] kenpurcell When I was 13 i switched the horizontal and vertical deflection guns so I could watch the tv in a mirror. [2/15/2020 6:39 PM] hon1nbo there's the big wire, but also the caps on the driver board for the flyback. Any gate voltage below about 4v and you won't fully turn it on, which makes the design much more complicated. [5/17/2020 12:19 AM] kentamanos yeah, just randomly Google'd "3.3v pwm to 5v led strip" and I see someone whining about this exact MOSFET: https://www.raspberrypi.org/forums/viewtopic.php?t=261273 [5/17/2020 12:20 AM] kentamanos clearly Mouser gave my newbie ass too many options 🙂 [5/17/2020 12:20 AM] michaelb5250 If I'm looking for a logic level fet I'll usually pull up the datasheet and look at the Rds(on) parameter. Not the value, but the test conditions. They spec Rds(on) at the Vgs they intend for you to run. [5/17/2020 12:20 AM] michaelb5250 Logic level fets will have a spec at Vgs=3.3v for example. [5/17/2020 12:21 AM] michaelb5250 And lol what I said earlier really is my method. What do they stock the most of. I.e, I'm not doing something special, and others know better, so what's everyone else buying. [5/17/2020 12:23 AM] kentamanos yeah, I watched the Digikey video series on KiCad, and when sourcing parts (obviously on Digikey), he just sorted by what they had the most stock of, and his reasoning was they stock what sells...hehe [5/17/2020 12:25 AM] michaelb5250 So here's a sparkfun level shifter, they're using a BSS138: http://cdn.sparkfun.com/datasheets/BreakoutBoards/Logic_Level_Bidirectional.pdf If you don't want surface mount, adafruit sells a 'Logic Level N channel fet', the IRLB8721. Obviously mouser sells both parts. [5/17/2020 12:26 AM] michaelb5250 Also, that level shifter works in both directions and is a neat little trick with mosfets. [5/17/2020 12:27 AM] kentamanos I randomly ran across something on Amazon and solder'd one up (I probably need to test connections on it, because I suck at soldering): https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B07LG646VS/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o04_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 [5/17/2020 12:28 AM] kentamanos Not sure exactly what mosfet that uses, let me see if I can read it... Basically a small piece of ferrous metal wrapped in "magnet wire". I have an idea for something I want to try out, but I might not want to hand wrap LOTS of them myself. I've read about some people trying to use inductors for such a job, but having a hard time telling if that really works. It's also a seemingly hard thing to Google successfully or find on Mouser. Technically this could be called a solenoid I THINK, but most of those results include the moving actuator type piece. [7/2/2020 8:09 AM] skyspook Try searching for "holding magnet" [7/2/2020 8:09 AM] skyspook Or similar. I see adafruit sells some, and ebay has similar. Depends on what holding force you need [7/2/2020 8:42 AM] nullinterface solenoids are going to be optimized for moving the plunger [7/2/2020 9:07 AM] nullinterface generally a hollow form with a sprung ferrous mass that pulls the mass into it against the spring with the actuator itself being pulled in or pushed out depending on orientation [7/2/2020 9:59 AM] kentamanos @ESmith Ah, "plunger" is a better term. The weird part seems to be TECHNICALLY a solenoid doesn't have to include that plunger but all the practical searches for that word include it. I think I need very little force, but a lot of them. I'm thinking about using them to push away a permanent magnet for a "pen up" operation on a polar bot type plotter (like Brandon's Gocupi back in the day). @Skyspook I'll look around for "holding magnets" and that seems to be a better search term, but the combination of size and prize might scare me off. I don't think need them to be as strong as most offerings etc. and might just have to wind my own (which would be a lot of them if they seem like they'd work). [7/2/2020 10:02 AM] nullinterface solenoids are generally used for short linear *binary* motion applications - power door locks, car starters, appliance safety locks, sprinkler valves - thus the plunger is a natural accessory [7/2/2020 10:07 AM] nullinterface a bit lost on your desire to push a magnet around when a more conventional plunger seems simpler and likely to fit within turnkey solutions out there in the market [7/2/2020 10:08 AM] nullinterface most solenoids that I've seen are of two styles: cylindrical or square. both concentrate the magnetic field inside the housing containing the windings. [7/2/2020 10:10 AM] nullinterface in a previous career I designed some gear that used solenoids for pneumatic valves as well as releasing spring-loaded catches [7/2/2020 10:12 AM] nullinterface rotary actuators are another style I occasionally considered; they spare the designer the need to devise a mechanism to shoehorn a linear solenoid into such an application [7/2/2020 10:13 AM] nullinterface I recall they also applied force more predictably and more consistently through the range of motion [7/2/2020 10:13 AM] nullinterface anyway - I'm babbling [7/2/2020 11:00 AM] kentamanos Ideally, I want it to be physically contact free. Most people do the "pen up" with a servo for instance (and a solenoid could also be used here), but that servo "scratches" previous dry erase work while it moves around (even if it has a very small contact point). Would be cool to push it away by ramping up electromagnets (not really levitating, just pushing away from the mostly vertical board) and then bring it back down by ramping electromagnets back down. This also means no power wires running to the stylus (or batteries) for a solenoid/servo. Not sure of the practicality overall, but I want to try an array of these magnets for this job. [7/2/2020 11:24 AM] nullinterface if you're not manipulating the pen up/down electrically then how are you doing it? [7/2/2020 11:38 AM] kentamanos electromagnets behind the board in theory repulsing a permanent magnet. No idea if it will work etc, but want to try it. [7/2/2020 11:38 AM] kentamanos would in theory cause it to swing away, allow it to move and then come back down [7/2/2020 11:39 AM] kentamanos it's either this or compressed air on the stylus...hehe [7/2/2020 11:45 AM] kenpurcell ??? Magnetic sheet behind the board with one electromagnet on the draw head, or permanent magnet on drawing head and a ton of electromagnets behind the board? [7/2/2020 11:47 AM] kenpurcell sounds similar in idea of flip discs that have a tiny electromagnet to swap contrasting sides. [7/2/2020 12:02 PM] nullinterface now the need for a great quantity of electromagnets makes sense [7/2/2020 12:20 PM] hardsuit Thus is reminding me of a coffee table concept I want to build [7/2/2020 12:20 PM] hardsuit Glass top, and has a dungeon maze diorama inside [7/2/2020 12:21 PM] kentamanos @Lampy (Ken Purcell) 2nd one, small permanent on the stylus and an array I can potentially activate groups of magnets behind the board. Very similar to those sorts of displays etc. [7/2/2020 12:21 PM] hardsuit Have a 2 axis arm underneath to magnetically move around monster and adventurer mini figs [7/2/2020 12:22 PM] kentamanos yeah, I have considered a "mirror stylus" so to speak behind the board I could activate like that [7/2/2020 12:22 PM] kentamanos could hook up to the same motors etc. and therefore be in the same spot [7/2/2020 12:23 PM] kentamanos that's starting to sound better 🙂 [7/2/2020 12:23 PM] kentamanos makes the whole thing a bit thicker though [7/2/2020 12:23 PM] kentamanos (deeper might be better word here) [7/2/2020 12:24 PM] kentamanos fairly sure I couldn't make a huge electromagnet the size of the entire white board and get the results I want, right? [7/2/2020 12:34 PM] kenpurcell hm interesting. Take some masonite pegboard, press in some metal sleeves and wind magnet wire around each pin. Wonder if you could weave it like core memory and have it work. [7/2/2020 12:41 PM] kentamanos that's a good idea too. Much more scalable than what I was thinking [7/2/2020 12:52 PM] kenpurcell just the "resolution" is fixed by the pegboard unless you drill your own on smooth masonite [7/2/2020 12:52 PM] kentamanos yeah, I think I just need to buy a crapload of "magnet wire" for now 😉 [7/2/2020 12:52 PM] kentamanos at least that's cheap [7/9/2020 10:37 AM] slinkygn on the unlikely off chance that anybody knows off the top of their heads: in our random piles of SMD tape, are there any 0605 (or within spitting distance of) RGB LEDs? [7/9/2020 10:37 AM] slinkygn A couple of them died out on a project board I have, and I'd rather pay the bin than drive all the way down to Mouser for 2 bucks worth of parts 🙂 [7/9/2020 10:38 AM] slinkygn 1615, if you prefer what some would call non-moonwalker units 🙂 [7/9/2020 12:00 PM] themitch22 Not addressable? [7/9/2020 12:02 PM] themitch22 From my understanding there is not really an organization of the smd reels in electronics. I'm sure if someone volunteered to do that, it would help. [7/9/2020 1:16 PM] kenpurcell ^ no org of most parts. Never saw addressable LEDs when we first got the donation. [7/9/2020 1:20 PM] kentamanos is common anode vs common cathode also a thing in that sort of package? [7/9/2020 1:22 PM] kenpurcell I usually only saw that in the four pin 10mm round packages [7/9/2020 1:22 PM] kenpurcell Always bought the wrong version [7/9/2020 9:10 PM] slinkygn yes, nonaddressable -- just dumb RGB LEDs, I don't need controllers embedded or otherwise 🙂 I'm not sure I've ever seen an 0605 addressable RGB LED! [7/9/2020 9:11 PM] slinkygn And yes, most of those SMD reels have been strewn about the Electronics space since basically the dawn of time 🙂 I kinda figured it would just be dumb luck if somebody had bothered to sift through them at some point, likely looking for something else, and happened to have seen them. You'll start Art harping about moving the personal storage bins again. When THERE ISN'T ANYWHERE TO MOVE THEM. Not that I'm bitter or anything. {Reactions} 👆 [7/13/2020 10:50 PM] canibalcrab also as much as that would be cool, its limited use to the space as a whole. like the pick and place machines [7/13/2020 11:13 PM] hon1nbo indeed [7/13/2020 11:13 PM] hon1nbo more if someone personally is interested [7/13/2020 11:13 PM] hon1nbo and is willing to run a 60A 208 3ph circuit for it [7/14/2020 7:54 AM] slinkygn You shouldn't say that. I meet both those criteria. 😁 [7/14/2020 7:56 AM] slinkygn I mean, I bet within a month we could get more people using it than have been certified on and able to use the HAAS over the past year... 😁 [7/14/2020 8:59 AM] michaelb5250 {Attachments} https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/300062878676025344/732597068056625282/e02e5ffb5f980cd8262cf7f0ae00a4a9_press-x-to-doubt-memes-memesuper-la-noire-doubt-meme_419-238.jpg?ex=67b92f70&is=67b7ddf0&hm=c517da54dfaed952ffa6295e08d9fcc0c80c70df13d1e569a1df6efc1b1f5657& [7/14/2020 9:02 AM] michaelb5250 We already have a reflow oven in electronics, not sure why we'd need a second one. [7/14/2020 9:10 AM] kenpurcell 🏆 Especially when we have already handled much of the very $$$ electrical work. [7/14/2020 11:01 AM] hon1nbo > We already have a reflow oven in electronics, not sure why we'd need a second one. @michaelb we do? Where? Is it buried under the mountain of black and yellow bins? [7/14/2020 11:10 AM] michaelb5250 It's an already-modified T962A sitting on top of the workbench next to the wire shelves. [7/14/2020 12:18 PM] slinkygn https://imgur.com/gallery/rYd4I/comment/1227577419 {Embed} https://imgur.com/gallery/rYd4I/comment/1227577419 That's not a knife https://images-ext-1.discordapp.net/external/0LjI3kUcOKPb1h84CD1HbEwwjT7qqgPyWZckKwc8OH4/https/i.imgur.com/cC16aXG.gif [7/14/2020 12:24 PM] slinkygn Comparing an ETS conveyor machine to a T962A is comparing a Haas to (edit) an X-carve [7/14/2020 12:30 PM] michaelb5250 I mean those are indeed two CNCs [7/14/2020 12:31 PM] michaelb5250 Purchasing a Haas when you don't even use your X-carve is a pretty big waste of money. [7/14/2020 12:33 PM] slinkygn If you have stuff you can do with the X-carve, sure -- but that's not usually how people buy stuff. [7/14/2020 12:34 PM] slinkygn You have a need, so you buy the thing that fits it -- not you buy a thing and hope your need fits it. [7/14/2020 12:34 PM] slinkygn Purchasing an X-carve because you want to mill billet aluminum but can't afford a Haas is a pretty big waste of money. [7/14/2020 12:35 PM] slinkygn The two aren't actually comparable. [7/14/2020 12:36 PM] michaelb5250 You can, if it's the only tool you have, well you might as well try. Having the shiny toys doesn't make you any better at doing something. [7/14/2020 12:36 PM] michaelb5250 Fact is, we have a reflow oven. It's the right price and size for us. We have no need for a large commercial oven [7/14/2020 12:37 PM] michaelb5250 Waiting for it to heat up, having to panelize your PCBs so they fit in the conveyor, taking up all that space in an already crowded committee area, which one of these are the benefits that you think the large machine will bring us? [7/14/2020 12:39 PM] michaelb5250 As for your 'more people will use this than use the Haas' comment, many more requests show up for the Haas on talk. I see many more people using it. Many more people have projects on the Haas. [7/14/2020 12:40 PM] michaelb5250 There's only a small portion of the space that would even have a project that requires a reflow oven. So much so that people don't even ask if we have one or how to use it. [7/14/2020 2:54 PM] slinkygn That's highly unlikely, considering how few people are certified on the HAAS and the fact that it is (supposed to be?) keylocked out. So if you're seeing all that many people using it they probably need to be reported. [7/14/2020 2:55 PM] slinkygn Last I checked the AD list and crossed it with active members, I think I got a result set 2 long. [7/14/2020 2:56 PM] slinkygn Whereas people may not ask about the reflow oven is because many people check the official reference for the tools available in e-lab -- in which the reflow oven isn't listed. [7/14/2020 2:57 PM] slinkygn That list has in recent history (1-2yrs or so) been pretty well kept up, at least compared to other committees. Anything that wasn't on there was usually broken. [7/14/2020 2:58 PM] slinkygn Which, as a matter of fact, was the state of the reflow oven we had there a few years back. I assume the one we're talking about isn't the same one? Or it got fixed, or something? [7/14/2020 2:58 PM] slinkygn I would imagine it's a different one, as the old one was a member's, I think. [7/14/2020 2:58 PM] michaelb5250 Many more than two people are currently trained on the Haas. [7/14/2020 2:59 PM] michaelb5250 Let me ask you this, how many projects do you know of that required a reflow oven? [7/14/2020 2:59 PM] slinkygn Trained and active, is what I checked. [7/14/2020 2:59 PM] hon1nbo AD does not have the Haas user list [7/14/2020 2:59 PM] hon1nbo it never has [7/14/2020 2:59 PM] hon1nbo it has those who have taken the classes [7/14/2020 2:59 PM] hon1nbo but not those who completed the practical [7/14/2020 2:59 PM] slinkygn Require? Few. Could use? Every single PCB project that goes through the E-lab. [7/14/2020 2:59 PM] hon1nbo the Haas RFID lockout was made before the AD list and integration was setup [7/14/2020 2:59 PM] hon1nbo it uses an offline BeagleBone with an internal RFID database [7/14/2020 3:00 PM] hon1nbo it's never been transitioned to anything else [7/14/2020 3:00 PM] michaelb5250 😂😂 well that's just wrong. [7/14/2020 3:00 PM] slinkygn It has like four different HAAS groups. And again, HAAS at least used to be keylocked against one of those AD lists. [7/14/2020 3:00 PM] hon1nbo dude, I'm the admin over AD [7/14/2020 3:00 PM] hon1nbo those AD groups aren't the actual operators groups [7/14/2020 3:00 PM] slinkygn There was a sync between Beagle one and that. [7/14/2020 3:00 PM] hon1nbo and I literally was working on its beaglebone the other daty [7/14/2020 3:00 PM] hon1nbo no, there isn't [7/14/2020 3:00 PM] hon1nbo they're manually added [7/14/2020 3:00 PM] michaelb5250 Barely any pcbs that go through DMS could even use a commercial reflow oven. I doubt many could use the desktop one. [7/14/2020 3:01 PM] hon1nbo we in fact have a student that can't be added right now because the instructor couldn't SSH into the unit [7/14/2020 3:01 PM] hon1nbo since they have to be added manually [7/14/2020 3:01 PM] slinkygn Are you positive? When I worked on the Chinese entry system I was pretty sure I was sitting on the code that synced that. [7/14/2020 3:01 PM] hon1nbo positive [7/14/2020 3:01 PM] hon1nbo literally the person that runs the network right now [7/14/2020 3:01 PM] slinkygn Fair enough. [7/14/2020 3:01 PM] hon1nbo sets up our current gen interlocks [7/14/2020 3:01 PM] slinkygn I know, Jim. :) [7/14/2020 3:01 PM] hon1nbo and is a machine shop teacher [7/14/2020 3:02 PM] hon1nbo the code for the chinese system pushes stuff from MM to the door controllers internal database [7/14/2020 3:02 PM] hon1nbo but the BB isn't on that and doesn't support it with the existing code [7/14/2020 3:02 PM] slinkygn I am having trouble imagining a PCB project that couldn't use a reflow oven. [7/14/2020 3:02 PM] slinkygn What, are people allergic to solder paste? [7/14/2020 3:03 PM] slinkygn No, of course not. This was years ago when we were trying to integrate the new system in. [7/14/2020 3:03 PM] michaelb5250 People are allergic to surface mount for one [7/14/2020 3:03 PM] slinkygn New back then. [7/14/2020 3:03 PM] michaelb5250 Kit PCBs don't come panelized to fit through a commercial oven. [7/14/2020 3:03 PM] slinkygn I've seen *plenty* of SMD projects in e-lab. [7/14/2020 3:03 PM] slinkygn You think that hot air tool goes unused? [7/14/2020 3:04 PM] michaelb5250 It's not worth the trouble to run up such a big oven for your one board. [7/14/2020 3:04 PM] slinkygn Anything that can use the hot air tool can use the toy reflow oven. [7/14/2020 3:04 PM] michaelb5250 But not the giant one you want. [7/14/2020 3:04 PM] hon1nbo there's a difference between a hobby scale reflow oven and a conveyor system [7/14/2020 3:04 PM] hon1nbo meant for assembly lines [7/14/2020 3:05 PM] slinkygn Okay, I'm getting whiplash here. Two arguments at once is enough, I'm not gonna do three. Are you standing by the statement that nobody does nearly anything that could use the reflow oven presently there? Or are you criticizing the desire for the big oven? [7/14/2020 3:05 PM] michaelb5250 It's not going to be any faster if you're doing multiple anyways. You'll still be hand printing paste and hand placing components. [7/14/2020 3:06 PM] michaelb5250 Alright, let's pick one. We don't need to replace our desktop over a commercial one. [7/14/2020 3:06 PM] michaelb5250 And go. [7/14/2020 3:07 PM] slinkygn We also used to have a small pick-n-place machine in there. [7/14/2020 3:07 PM] slinkygn Oh, that's easy. [7/14/2020 3:07 PM] slinkygn Read back at my "requests" that we pick it up, and "request" that we expand the E-lab space for it, and look at all the laugh emoji by them. [7/14/2020 3:08 PM] michaelb5250 You mean your claim that it'll get more use than the Haas? [7/14/2020 3:08 PM] michaelb5250 Oh is this going to be one of those 'I won't admit I'm wrong so I'll just play like it was sarcasm' things? [7/14/2020 3:08 PM] michaelb5250 Let's find out. [7/14/2020 3:09 PM] slinkygn And realize when you took something WAY too seriously - and expanded that to a scope where there *is* a legitimate argument against what you're saying, which is that a reflow oven would nearly never be used. [7/14/2020 3:09 PM] hon1nbo no one has said a reflow oven would never be used [7/14/2020 3:09 PM] slinkygn Did you notice the emoji attached to that claim too? Or are you intentionally being obtuse. [7/14/2020 3:09 PM] hon1nbo the statement has always been said "conveyor" system [7/14/2020 3:09 PM] yashsedai omg more pedant competition [7/14/2020 3:09 PM] slinkygn Nearly never? Yes, he did, nearly verbatim. [7/14/2020 3:09 PM] slinkygn And repeatedly. [7/14/2020 3:09 PM] hon1nbo I know, seems like there's been stiff competition for the big D [7/14/2020 3:09 PM] hon1nbo except he didn't [7/14/2020 3:09 PM] hon1nbo quote it [7/14/2020 3:09 PM] hon1nbo with context [7/14/2020 3:10 PM] hon1nbo showing that he wasn't talking about that large commercial conveyor unit [7/14/2020 3:10 PM] slinkygn Seriously? [7/14/2020 3:10 PM] slinkygn Sure. [7/14/2020 3:10 PM] michaelb5250 > Ahh yes, the good old 'it was just sarcasm dude' defense. [7/14/2020 3:10 PM] slinkygn > Fact is, we have a reflow oven. It's the right price and size for us. We have no need for a large commercial oven @michaelb > Let me ask you this, how many projects do you know of that required a reflow oven? @michaelb [7/14/2020 3:10 PM] slinkygn Skipped one [7/14/2020 3:11 PM] yashsedai omg nobody cares [7/14/2020 3:11 PM] slinkygn > There's only a small portion of the space that would even have a project that requires a reflow oven. So much so that people don't even ask if we have one or how to use it. @michaelb [7/14/2020 3:11 PM] hon1nbo > Fact is, we have a reflow oven. It's the right price and size for us. We have no need for a large commercial oven @michaelb this for context [7/14/2020 3:11 PM] michaelb5250 If you read what I said, 'We already have a reflow oven, don't know why we'd need a second one' At which point you came at me for trying to compare the two. {Reactions} 💯 [7/14/2020 3:11 PM] slinkygn "a reflow oven" was always used to include the small one. [7/14/2020 3:11 PM] yashsedai where is my low orbit ion cannon when i need it {Reactions} dumpsterfire [7/14/2020 3:11 PM] slinkygn Conveyor was specifically used to talk about the big one, yes, as was "the large machine." [7/14/2020 3:12 PM] slinkygn It was always specified. [7/14/2020 3:13 PM] slinkygn > If you read what I said, 'We already have a reflow oven, don't know why we'd need a second one' At which point you came at me for trying to compare the two. @michaelb no, you wrote six more messages after that. I quoted the most relevant ones. [7/14/2020 3:13 PM] hon1nbo and like we've said, we have no use for the large machine. we've never said we do zero reflow work or it's not useful to have at all [7/14/2020 3:13 PM] slinkygn I could quote the entire thing, if you like. Or you could just reread it. [7/14/2020 3:13 PM] slinkygn Of course we don't. [7/14/2020 3:13 PM] hon1nbo but to say we can justify a large commercial unit is just laughable [7/14/2020 3:13 PM] slinkygn Nobody did, Jim. [7/14/2020 3:14 PM] hon1nbo @michaelb has constantly been refuting how people won't want to panelize their small hobby projects for a conveyor, we have a unit that's the right size for us, etc [7/14/2020 3:14 PM] michaelb5250 I did re-read it, I made that one statement, and then you started talking this crap about Haas vs X-Carve [7/14/2020 3:14 PM] slinkygn Christ. [7/14/2020 3:14 PM] slinkygn With a Crocodile Dundee meme. [7/14/2020 3:14 PM] slinkygn CLEARLY SUPER SERIOUS [7/14/2020 3:14 PM] hon1nbo whatever, I'm done. wants to argue for the sake of arguing because we won't get a stupid piece of machinery that's useless for a makerspace [7/14/2020 3:15 PM] slinkygn No, he didn't even mention panelizing until about 15 minutes ago, Jim. What have you been reading? [7/14/2020 3:15 PM] hon1nbo clearly knows how the other equipment here works, totally doesn't need to listen to us [7/14/2020 3:15 PM] michaelb5250 Ahh, again 'lol dude chill it was only sarcasm!' said after three pages of argument. 🙄 [7/14/2020 3:15 PM] hon1nbo lawl the entire argument? I posted the original link [7/14/2020 3:15 PM] slinkygn Other than that part I quoted. [7/14/2020 3:15 PM] hon1nbo and Michael was with me are the warehouse that had it [7/14/2020 3:15 PM] hon1nbo literally the start of the discussion [7/14/2020 3:16 PM] hon1nbo anyway I'm done; getting close to D levels of pedantry [7/14/2020 3:16 PM] Deleted User > I mean, I bet within a month we could get more people using it than have been certified on and able to use the HAAS over the past year... 😁 @slinkygn (George) really seems like this all came about because you misunderstood HAAS permissions... [7/14/2020 3:16 PM] slinkygn Sorry, lost connectivity for about 60secs there, catching up. [7/14/2020 3:16 PM] slinkygn Really, the grin didn't give anything away? [7/14/2020 3:16 PM] Deleted User nope [7/14/2020 3:17 PM] slinkygn That was a crack on the fact that we haven't been able to recruit HAAS trainers, which has been a problem for literally years. Which you should know perfectly well, Jim. [7/14/2020 3:17 PM] slinkygn Sorry, that wasn't Jim. Speed reading. [7/14/2020 3:17 PM] michaelb5250 We have 3 or 4 people teaching the Haas right now. [7/14/2020 3:17 PM] michaelb5250 You really need to chill until you get up to date. [7/14/2020 3:18 PM] slinkygn Trust me, the one putting in emoji and Crock Dundee memes didn't need to chill. Then, anyway. Because he wasn't seriously advocating for a tool that would literally take up half of E-lab to be brought in. [7/14/2020 3:19 PM] slinkygn And if anyone unclear on obviously sardonic statements had, say, *asked if I was serious* instead of presuming a call to war and overstating their case, this would certainly have been avoided. [7/14/2020 3:20 PM] slinkygn Maybe a class on 3d printing paste screens based off kicad plans is what's needed here. Who knows. [7/14/2020 3:20 PM] slinkygn Aka [7/14/2020 3:21 PM] Deleted User So why are you so triggered now if it's all a joke? [7/14/2020 3:21 PM] slinkygn @yashsedai I think I found your low orbital ion cannon when I found who shot Crocodile Dundee. [7/14/2020 3:21 PM] hon1nbo *metaphorically; it would not literally take up half the e-lab and yet kept justifying how it would get more use than the haas, clearly showing a lack of understanding on how our tools are used, claiming the haas doesn't have teachers. Like you keep justifying the machine, yet claiming you're just being sarcastic (sorry, couldn't resist chiming back in. really wish I had some popcorn here) [7/14/2020 3:21 PM] michaelb5250 Sorry, I forgot. It was always a joke now that you've lost the argument. [7/14/2020 3:21 PM] slinkygn Seriously, memes and emoji. [7/14/2020 3:22 PM] slinkygn I never justified how it would get more use than the HAAS, even. [7/14/2020 3:22 PM] hon1nbo I mean, if they were said alone that's one thing.... but you kept pushing it [7/14/2020 3:22 PM] slinkygn I just stayed it would. [7/14/2020 3:22 PM] hon1nbo as a serious argument [7/14/2020 3:22 PM] slinkygn *stated [7/14/2020 3:22 PM] michaelb5250 Well neither of us treated it like a joke, so was it really a joke? [7/14/2020 3:22 PM] michaelb5250 No [7/14/2020 3:22 PM] hon1nbo onlookers here does this seem like a joke? [7/14/2020 3:22 PM] slinkygn My suggestion was a joke. You treated it as not a joke, and in that process said nobody would use a reflow oven. I disagreed. [7/14/2020 3:23 PM] canibalcrab Calm down nerds [7/14/2020 3:23 PM] canibalcrab I see slinky trying to defuse and others berating them [7/14/2020 3:23 PM] slinkygn > So why are you so triggered now if it's all a joke? @Deleted User > Sorry, I forgot. It was always a joke now that you've lost the argument. @michaelb You guys have fun deciding whether you want to argue if I currently think it's a joke or it's not. [7/14/2020 3:23 PM] canibalcrab Everyone just run off to another channel and forget it [7/14/2020 3:24 PM] slinkygn Pushing what as a serious argument? [7/14/2020 3:24 PM] michaelb5250 But pearce this is so much more fun! [7/14/2020 3:24 PM] slinkygn I'll be happy to drop it once I know what words are being put iny mouth. [7/14/2020 3:24 PM] slinkygn The serious argument would be, the reflow oven would get used. [7/14/2020 3:24 PM] draco_the_drake I think we should have a small reflow oven if we don't already have one [7/14/2020 3:24 PM] michaelb5250 We do, draco, we do. [7/14/2020 3:24 PM] yashsedai {Attachments} https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/300062878676025344/732694149777850408/spongebob.jpg?ex=67b8e11a&is=67b78f9a&hm=b8efdf75391edff0ddd8627a6cca97c7db038558441357307fb7f8f1420b87dc& [7/14/2020 3:25 PM] slinkygn There's one in there. Still hoping for an answer if it's the 4yo one that isn't listed on the equipment list because it's broken or if it's a new one. [7/14/2020 3:25 PM] michaelb5250 Oh man I've had enough, I gotta get back to work. Peace [7/14/2020 3:26 PM] slinkygn That would be part of my serious non-joking discussion that I asked in that text you may have read. [7/14/2020 3:27 PM] slinkygn The actual reflow oven I discussed seriously, because I'd actually use it. (You can tell because, y'know, no laughing emoji or memes of 90s movies.) [7/14/2020 3:27 PM] hon1nbo we have an oven; @michaelb and I both agree it is the right size for what we need and it doesn't make sense to get a bigger one. Then someone comes along and says we should get it because it's way nicer. Argues that it would get more users than the haas, justifies it like comparing the haas to x-carve, pretends they know how many people actually use the haas, when we keep saying it doesn't make sense to use a commercial sized oven for one board / hobby scales goes into arguments about how the hot air tools get used etc and that's justification, then claims it was all a joke despite not just backing out of the discussion earlier I think that's enough of a tl;dr. thanks for the reminder @michaelb I'm technically still on the clock [7/14/2020 3:29 PM] hon1nbo start of the seriousness and not a joke was clearly here: > Comparing an ETS conveyor machine to a T962A is comparing a Haas to (edit) an X-carve @slinkygn (George) [7/14/2020 3:29 PM] slinkygn I can show you the AD search I performed. Not that I think it's relevant. I appreciate your outlining your perception of what happened. Clarifies right up for me when and how much of what was clearly jest you guys took knee-jeel seriously despite big obvious Australian cues otherwise. [7/14/2020 3:29 PM] slinkygn That was LITERALLY POSTED WITH THE MEME [7/14/2020 3:29 PM] hon1nbo dude, you kept digging your heels in [7/14/2020 3:30 PM] hon1nbo random throwing ins of memes in you defending why we need a machine like that doesn't somehow make it a joke [7/14/2020 3:30 PM] hon1nbo or sarcasm [7/14/2020 3:30 PM] slinkygn I posted that statement with the meme. That was a JOKE. [7/14/2020 3:30 PM] hon1nbo if you left it at the original lines that would have been one thing, but then you posted that [7/14/2020 3:30 PM] hon1nbo and it kept going [7/14/2020 3:30 PM] slinkygn You called that the "start of the seriousness" [7/14/2020 3:30 PM] hon1nbo "slinkygn: Comparing an ETS conveyor machine to a T962A is comparing a Haas to (edit) an X-carve(edited) [12:30 PM] michaelb: I mean those are indeed two CNCs [12:31 PM] michaelb: Purchasing a Haas when you don't even use your X-carve is a pretty big waste of money. [12:33 PM] slinkygn: If you have stuff you can do with the X-carve, sure -- but that's not usually how people buy stuff. [12:34 PM] slinkygn: You have a need, so you buy the thing that fits it -- not you buy a thing and hope your need fits it. [12:34 PM] slinkygn: Purchasing an X-carve because you want to mill billet aluminum but can't afford a Haas is a pretty big waste of money." [7/14/2020 3:30 PM] slinkygn Acknowledging that everything before that was clearly not serious [7/14/2020 3:31 PM] slinkygn So, basically, for you the transition from non-serious to serious, again, included a movie meme and little else. [7/14/2020 3:31 PM] hon1nbo whatever; I'm muting the channel now [7/14/2020 3:31 PM] hon1nbo it's too distracting [7/14/2020 3:31 PM] slinkygn That is the flying off the cuff I'm referring to. [7/14/2020 3:31 PM] slinkygn That's fine. You've clarified what you perceived. I appreciate it. [7/14/2020 3:34 PM] slinkygn And that your thought it started with my line about the HAAS and X-carve vs big and little oven. Instead of the following line - "Purchasing a HAAS when you don't even use your x-carve..." Remember 5m ago when you said nobody had said a reflow oven wouldn't be used, even the small one? As a response to my saying that is what I disagreed with and put forth an argument for? [7/14/2020 3:35 PM] slinkygn Like I said. Thanks for clarifying. [7/14/2020 3:35 PM] slinkygn Next time I'll make sure to not discuss anything while on the phone Discord app. 🙄 [7/14/2020 4:51 PM] doug.emes @slinkygn (George) would you mind editing your profile in this discord to use your given name? I'm pretty brutal about tossing stuff -- though if it's just me it'll take a while. [8/18/2020 2:22 PM] yashsedai I propose that we order a dumpster, take all the bins, throw contents in said dumpster, tell everyone the dumpster will be gone in one week, let the chips fall as they may, one condition, nothing comes back in the building [8/18/2020 2:22 PM] kenpurcell Or at least follow up when you say you are going to go through them. I have already thrown away several million parts (SMD/SMT) though. I can come back up there with a crew and wreak havoc! [8/18/2020 2:23 PM] yashsedai While we are at it, go over into electronics dept and do the same with all the bs sitting around [8/18/2020 2:29 PM] michaelb5250 @Skyspook I'll help go through it as well. Though I thought Malcolm and Art had a group already doing that. [8/18/2020 2:30 PM] skyspook No clue. [8/18/2020 2:40 PM] malcolmputer I set up a google doc with the inventory in sheets, set up some basic categories, and Art and I went through about 10% of the inventory as a test to see how the sheet works. [8/18/2020 2:42 PM] malcolmputer We took down info such as the following: [8/18/2020 2:42 PM] malcolmputer 1 Relay 2 NO Relay 30A 208 coil 9 1 Hardware Metric M2, M3, M4 bolts, nuts, washers 15 1 Solenoid Robot Grabber Arm 1 1 Breakers 40A 240V AC/DC 22 1 Tools Magnifying Glass 24 1 Eval Board Video Converter + Cables, VGA S Video Composite 1 [8/18/2020 2:42 PM] malcolmputer and of course it's sortable etc. [8/18/2020 2:43 PM] malcolmputer The plan was once we had inventoried everything we would start deciding how to bundle for sale/giveaway/whatever is legal with DMS and what to keep as a honor system donation style things for DMS elab. {Reactions} 👍 (3) [8/18/2020 2:43 PM] michaelb5250 dumb question: was there a mechanism for locating items in the room? [8/18/2020 2:44 PM] malcolmputer Bin number, that's the first row in the above paste. [8/18/2020 2:44 PM] malcolmputer We got through bins 1-12 out of ~120. [8/18/2020 2:45 PM] malcolmputer All of the bins have a small sharpie marked number on the bin and the bin lid to make sure we don't confuse them by moving them around. [8/18/2020 2:49 PM] skyspook Rock on 🙂 [8/18/2020 2:49 PM] malcolmputer @Skyspook I'm sure Art would be happy to have another volunteer to help him with the bins. I set up the sheet, the categories, but let him know that it was back in his court as my work stuff picked back up. [8/18/2020 4:13 PM] kenpurcell A searchable spreadsheet is ideal. [8/18/2020 5:26 PM] malcolmputer It is searchable, and more importantly filterable. You could for instance, filter to relays, and then sort high to low by quantity, and if you wanted to filter by AC or DC and then search by max V or A you could. [8/19/2020 12:56 AM] slinkygn @malcolmputer link to the Google doc, by chance? [8/19/2020 1:47 AM] themitch22 Are the parts from tanners free for all or someone gets first dibs? [8/19/2020 8:30 AM] kenpurcell Traditionally they have been free to use in projects, not just free to take for your home stock pile. I guess determine DMS's use first, then members use and then enough for free to take. [8/19/2020 8:31 AM] kenpurcell That may change depending on how long the take up orange [8/19/2020 9:17 AM] canibalcrab But electronics has to sort the donation before anyone can go taking stuff [8/19/2020 9:32 AM] malcolmputer @slinkygn (George) @artg_dms is the owner of the sheet, I think he's only giving it to people who volunteer to sort in the short term at least. [8/19/2020 9:33 AM] malcolmputer The electronics are not free, keep your mitts to yourself until @artg_dms says otherwise. [8/19/2020 9:37 AM] michaelb5250 Is there an active effort to sort it? Like days set up or people being recruited? Art didn't say anything at the last committee meeting, he mentioned other stuff like amateur radio and mouser donations [8/19/2020 9:39 AM] michaelb5250 I guess where I'm concerned is that electronics has a history of hoarding things, and now an entire classroom is tied up with crates of stuff, people are told not to touch, and it seems like the committee is fine just letting it sit there. [8/19/2020 9:41 AM] brsims2406 You aren't the only one with those concerns. I pinged Art about it this morning. [8/19/2020 9:51 AM] slinkygn > @slinkygn (George) @artg_dms is the owner of the sheet, I think he's only giving it to people who volunteer to sort in the short term at least. @malcolmputer I'd volunteer to sort. It'd be more productive than the time I spent sorting the old piles and piles of components. :) [8/19/2020 2:23 PM] michaelb5250 Coworker found a pack of these when cleaning out his desk, I think they would go real well with the rest of the stuff in electronics 😝 {Attachments} https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/300062878676025344/745724658778636318/20200819_142227.jpg?ex=67b8d2b5&is=67b78135&hm=78d4a933b12810ce70a242f34d6a2ef918fc24b3765227b67c9bcc72346e07b8& {Reactions} 👍 [8/19/2020 2:29 PM] skyspook lol, I used those! There is an invert parameter you can pass to the init function, I believe that should invert the logic for you [3/7/2021 5:49 PM] skyspook I assume you'd be looking for invert = (UART.INV_RX | UART.INV_TX) [3/7/2021 5:50 PM] themitch22 Is that for C or micropython? [6/27/2021 3:43 PM] michaelb5250 https://www.transistorclock.com/ [7/2/2021 9:22 AM] nullinterface Utility installed new transformers in my neighborhood and I find the ratings on them confusing - 75KVA and 50KVA. In my mind that's basically 75kW and 50kW respectively, which seems awfully small when the 150A panel in my house can theoretically draw 36kW and each transformer serves something like 5-8 structures. [7/2/2021 9:24 AM] nullinterface Also they're stamped 7200V, which - assuming KVA = kW - for a 50kVA unit would be <7A on the supply side [7/2/2021 9:30 AM] skyspook Rating is in kVA cause of power factors and how the loading works. Could be less or more in wattage than that rating. But also, yes, if everyone were to go to max on everything, you may blow the transformer. Watched it happen once, pretty display... They probably looked at what loads those houses had been using in the past, along with some knowledge of what an average house uses, and decided 50kVA was fine. There's likely some wiggle room for overloads like maybe 1 hour at 55 or 60kVA. [7/2/2021 10:49 AM] nullinterface can probably handle brief loads well in excess of that? [7/2/2021 10:50 AM] michaelb5250 Yeah, probably. It's mostly a heat thing, so the thermal mass of the all the steel in the transformer gives it some overload capability. [7/2/2021 10:50 AM] nullinterface i.e. anyone on an analog thermostat probably had their HVAC units all restart within a second of power being restored after the replacement was re-energized [7/2/2021 10:53 AM] michaelb5250 I'd be surprised if those types of surges we _not_ a factor in designing the transformer. [7/2/2021 10:53 AM] nullinterface just weird that with EV's coming down the pipe they didn't plan ahead [7/2/2021 10:53 AM] nullinterface and possibly in another decade or so heat pumps starting to displace gas furnaces [7/2/2021 10:54 AM] michaelb5250 Hopefully by the time EVs are that prevalent, they can stagger their charge times or something equally clever to reduce peak loading. The power supplies are basically constant power output so as the battery voltage drops the input current goes up (toward infinity). The battery plant melted all the insulation off the 2/0 wires we used as the battery voltage dipped toward zero. [12/10/2021 7:01 PM] mstovenour you can also just use a breaker to trip as the battery current approaches the safety limit of your wires. [12/10/2021 7:10 PM] aceat64 it's LiFePO4 cells, so they're a good bit safer thankfully, but I am using a pretty nice BMS that covers pretty much everything [12/10/2021 7:11 PM] aceat64 https://overkillsolar.com/product/bms-100a-16s-lifepo4/ {Embed} overkillsolar https://overkillsolar.com/product/bms-100a-16s-lifepo4/ 16s BMS 100a LifePo4 Battery Management System for 48v DIY Batterie... I’m a novice when it comes to electronic, but I’m about to tackle making an led sign. I’ll be wiring in several different LED strips, I’m trying to determine is there an advantage/ disadvanted to wirining them in parallel vs serial? If I can, I’d like to avoid having to solder both sides of the LED. Any advice would help me a lot. Thank you [11/14/2022 3:21 PM] kenpurcell The determination on wether to use serial, parallel or serial/parallel is what is the source voltage you want to drive your LED sign from. The forward voltage drop of most high efficiency LEDs is 2.2 volts. So if your using 12 volts (actually 13.8V) from a car, so it is pretty simple to put 5-6 LEDs in series. For individually addressable LED strips the power is normally paralleled. Stable power is important. Small installations can have a single power connection but for anything larger I normally splice in power every few feet to keep it robust. Control signals go into 1 end of each strip of lights... and can come out the other end to daisy chain to the next strip (or you can start a new chain from your controller if that's easier) {Reactions} 👍 (2) [11/16/2022 1:08 PM] ish07490 Thank you all so much for responding. They also were a little under voltage. Modern pre activated chems can have a shelf like of 15 years if you get the industrial and critical load versions. [12/28/2022 12:13 AM] hon1nbo I think Procell is 10 years (though have to source carefully now it seems, last Amazon batch were ripoffs. I last got some from Metroplex Battery) [12/29/2022 9:09 AM] nullinterface Thanks. That's what I was remembering. [12/29/2022 9:11 AM] nullinterface and ... ***dang*** ... that's expensive [12/29/2022 9:23 AM] nullinterface some fragmented speculative info here https://www.candlepowerforums.com/threads/un-activated-d-cells.205925/ [3/5/2023 12:25 PM] chadpursley Help, how do I get the projector in the Lecture hall working? [1/3/2024 5:57 PM] freakd Hey, I'm Roy, new to the space! 👋 I've visited once and was amazed, planning to sign up soon! I have a Gaggia Classic Pro that I want to install a PID mod for, and ideally play with Gagguino. My electronics skills are a bit rusty, I'd love some help in exchange for helping in any software / cybersecurity projects you may have! If anyone is up for that, I'm planning to come to the space during the weekend (Fri / Sat) and bring everything, so let me know if you feel like joining 🙂 ============================================================== Exported 1,052 message(s) ==============================================================
