Would DMS be interested in some free granite? Remodel of kitchen has left me with some large pieces of finished / polished granite. One piece is about 5' x 5' with all finished edges. It would make a good work surface. Others are various sizes. Granite is black - called Uba Tuba. I need help moving it if DMS wants it. Location is McKinney. If not desired by DMS, anyone can have it. Otherwise I might make really expensive gravel...

Like I said before, it's an open source project. Anybody can do a project to upgrade the station, the station isnt my project. It comes down to this, I asked who wanted to join the project to PM me. I got one guy. Everybody else who hasn't, has been giving suggestions on what they want to see done and they've been noted. If people want to add more features after we're done or join us in doing the work then great, otherwise whoever is doing the project will end up doing what they are willing to...

Goodmorning everyone 😃 I'll be at the space mostly all day. I'm loaning my orgo glasswear distillation kit to the space and a microbio tech grade microscopy set . Is there anything around here that needs upkeep or anything I can do for community service? id really like to help in anyway I can. Also is there a designated sink I can clean some of the old glassware in?
8:52 AM
Also I have fairly recent textbooks and lab manuals from ochem, biochem, microbio, gen chem, and bioinformatics I've taken/helped teach; if you all think it'd be good to keep around for reference
Avatar
Ashley_Newland 6/16/2017 1:05 PM
Ty so much for your contribution!! To clean the glassware I have been using the sink in the galley and we have an autoclave behind the biosafety hood. As far as reference books, I like the idea but the last time we had a bookshelf it wasn't really kept up and became a dumping ground for older underused textbooks. Down the line we might get one but I want to make the area more organized beforehand.
Avatar
No worries I'm just glad to help and thank you for letting me know. I have the simple distillation set up with just water right now. We may not be able to do much with the distillation apparatus since we have a carbon filter, but I'm pretty sure we can use it for aromatic oils and chemicals that aren't as hazardous 😦

oh boy I understand 0 of "Leading- and lagging-strand polymerases function autonomously within a replisome"
Avatar
Ashley_Newland 6/19/2017 2:11 PM
lolololol they are talking about DNA replication
2:13 PM
DNA polymerase is the enzyme that "makes" new DNA. When you take the double helix DNA molecule, another enzyme (helicase) unwinds the helix so you have 2 template strands: the leading and lagging strand. Each strand has its own polymerase to synthesize a new whole DNA molecule
Avatar
LukeStrickland 6/19/2017 2:15 PM
Wait so you start with one strand, it replicates to two strands with each their own ability to replicate more times ?
2:17 PM
here's a summary of that paper
Avatar
LukeStrickland 6/19/2017 2:18 PM
Getting flashbacks to highschool reading this haha
2:18 PM
But this new footage reveals that there's no coordination at play here at all - somehow, each strand acts independently of the other, and still results in a perfect match each time.

DNA replication, transcription, and translation are so interesting. its a miracle we are all alive.

A. Spencer(jast) 9/3/2020 12:07 PM
how does this compare in physical size to, say, a nuclear submarine...um...power unit, or whatever they call them...My extremely limited knowledge of them (that they exist, largely, is where it ends) suggest this is not dissimilar, and about 10% of the size in production capability (50MW vs the subs' "up to" 500MW), but I can't find a thing about the physical dimensions, or so, of a sub unit...

submarines also tend to use the reactor's steam plant to spin the propeller shaft directly

thus the rated output will not necessarily be the useful power output (although it's a very good approximation)

9:38 PM
We do seem to have gotten better at treating it as well. Since it doesn't seem like we will be getting rid of it, I imagine it will hang around like the flu with the occasional bad years. Would require way more people than i think are willing to get vaccinated to eliminate it.
9:43 PM
Though typically viruses mutate in a way to help them spread more, so typically keeping the host alive longer/not killing the host is beneficial towards that. They still can mutate to be more harmful but i think is less likely if it hurts its ability to spread. So hopefully if its hanging around it will be less deadly.
Avatar
coronaviruses mutate slower than influenza, and with the mRNA vaccines we can make new vaccines faster than ever and far more targeted
9:59 PM
part of why they picked the spike protein is to lower the chance that mutations will breakthrough the immune response, but from what I understand there may be an even better spot to target so if we do need additional boosters it may only be for a few years at most (hopefully) (edited)

A. Spencer(jast) 10/25/2021 4:54 PM
I have my doubts anything is actually recycled, regardless of which truck picks it up, or what center it goes to... (paywalls suck so if you find this on the free plz post up) https://www.forbes.com/sites/kenrapoza/2021/01/10/china-quits-recycling-us-trash-as-sustainable-start-up-makes-strides/?sh=2ead24195a56 The gist is: here's a company that's set to make tonnes of $ from "plant-based non-recyclables that biodegrade". They're the rage for the last 3 years or so to my knowledge, including my trip to SanFran where we could choose from 'plant-based biodegradable discardable' or "recyclable" "dinnerware" with the catered meals. 3:1, attendees chose 'plant-based'.
A Virginia based company making to-go boxes is one example of how U.S. made recycling solutions don't need China to take our junk.
Avatar
aluminum, paper almost always makes sense to recycle; steel usually; glass if there's a consumer nearby; plastic ... the bulk of it gets downcycled into the likes of fake wood park benches
10:19 PM
#1 and #2 are more amenable to being remade into equivalent materials, but I gather the processes are a bit tenuous on their economic viability
10:19 PM
shipping bulk plastic to China for recycling was always a weird thing
Avatar
A. Spencer(jast) 10/26/2021 6:57 AM
Although those "make sense to recycle", it tends to be commercial streams which are. If you take aluminum or steel to your local scrap yard they probably get made into new things. Bags dropped at you local retailer might get turned into plastic deck boards. The stuff your local waste stream processor picks up from your neighborhood... goes to the landfill these days. Anything else would just be too expensive to process, and we consumers won't pay for it (and arguably even if we would it is irresponsible ecologically and economically to do so). That's what shipping it to China was always about: cheaper than trying to process here, and we got to feel good about last night's takeout box being tomorrow's iPhone (whether we were lied to or chose to be blind to the fact that wasn't really happening is probably a debate for the ages, and likely a columna columnb thing). Plus, now "plant based"...
Avatar
Lampy (Ken Purcell) 10/26/2021 9:54 AM
The possibility that both sets of trucks (trash and recycling) go to the same destination should be criminal if that is true. Double the infrastructure and a big lie about it actually being recycled?

I can't say whether there is a stop by some facility to dump one load prior to making the rounds for the other

Technology has gotten decent enough to do single stream these days, although there are places that just pretend as well (edited)

observations of Mt. Lewisville & other landfill facilities in the metroplex suggest that ain't happening here, unless by 'single stream' you mean straight to landfill (which would agree with my earlier statement).
Avatar
if it's single stream why do I have to pay more for a separate recycling bin
10:21 AM
and why won't Dallas bring me the second bin
Avatar
A. Spencer(jast) 10/26/2021 10:21 AM
facilities which sort anything other than metallic from non metallic are pretty unusual, as there is no technology for nonmetallic sorting outside of carbon-based computer power and scanning for the little images with numbers in them. (edited)

Some of the computer vision is getting scary, along with laser identification of plastic types... but yes, it's most likely it just gets all dumped.

That nut will eventually be cracked, but for now...
Avatar
Mt Lewisville used to have onsite primary-stream extractors onsite. but then the foothills encroached and they had to clear out.
3:29 PM
Lewisville certainly communicates constantly about recycling and what causes loads to be rejected (contamination, non-recyclable items in the bin) thus it seems they actually recycling things
Avatar
I recall some bruhahah about the same truck running general refuse and recycling, but I suspect that's for convenience and doesn't impact yield since recycling is single-bin anyway

And yes, what happens next is just what you think happens: you run a mixture of oxygen and fluorine through a 700-degree-heating block. "Oh, no you don't," is the common reaction of most chemists to that proposal, ". . .not unless I'm at least a mile away, two miles if I'm downwind." This, folks, is the bracingly direct route to preparing dioxygen difluoride, often referred to in the literature by its evocative formula of FOOF.

I don't see why not, but you'd probably need a much higher CFM fan instead of the cheapo box fans
Avatar
One problem with lasers is just the amount of stuff. You need a lot of filter area or to replace them regularly.
Avatar
Good point, might work with a small, low usage laser then
10:50 PM
Probably wouldn't survive a day at DMS

My wife's school district built some to test in elementary school after they could not get replacement filters for the units they had.
8:31 AM
Alton Brown has a method of stacked filters on a box fan used to dry jerky. Looked janky but did work. Although for the cost of 6 filters and a box fan you could buy a food dehydrator.

for anyone that doesn't know the origin of this quote: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Long-term_nuclear_waste_warning_messages
Long-term nuclear waste warning messages are intended to deter human intrusion at nuclear waste repositories in the far future, within or above the order of magnitude of 10,000 years. Nuclear semiotics is an interdisciplinary field of research, first done by the American Human Interference Task Force in 1981. A 1993 report from Sandia National L...
Avatar
it's actually a really interesting problem to solve, how do you warn people in the far distant future about high grade nuclear waste
2:38 PM
huh, I didn't think about that
2:39 PM
one of the proposed ideas was a song/poem, but the warning message itself being a meme is interesting
Avatar
Find local businesses, view maps and get driving directions in Google Maps.
Avatar
we'll keep repeating it because it's funny, and maybe in the future they'll do the same
Avatar
enormous gravel / rubble pile on mediocre-to-useless land
Avatar
but humans are intrigued by anomalies
Avatar
by the time the knowledge has been lost the danger of the waste will have been greatly reduced
Avatar
if someone in the 1850s came across that, they'd probably dig
Avatar
end of the day warnings will only go so far if the knowledge has been well and truly lost
Avatar
also, 1850s people might be curious, but they'd surely lack the ability to seriously quarry the area for funsies if it's not valuable materials
Avatar
I think the idea of geological storage is probably best, there's work being done on vertical drilling based systems for this, that would all but eliminate the ability of someone to physically disturb or extract the waste without sufficient tech (which should mean they are at a level where they understand radiation)
2:45 PM
even if you know exactly where the waste was placed, it would be difficult to retrieve
Avatar
I do wonder if there's some misunderstanding by the public about the nature of long-term waste disposal. the hot waste that could kill in minutes or hours has short half-lives and has simmered down to much lower intensity in storage pools then dry cask storage long before it's a candidate for long-term disposal.
2:47 PM
doesn't mean you want to crush it up into gravel and pave drainage ditches with the remaining stuff, but the risks are mostly of long-term exposure and groundwater contamination
Avatar
yeah, it's actually pretty safe stuff all things considered
2:48 PM
in practice it's been far less dangerous than burning coal
Avatar
thus, dispose of it appropriately as best we can for the long haul and make the best warning indicators that we can but don't get too hung up on the oft-stated one hundred thousand years timescale
Avatar
I like the deep isolation system since it can be done onsite most of the time
2:50 PM
and there's no need for the warning systems
2:52 PM
at this rate though, we might have actual fusion reactors before we can build a new fission plant in the US
2:52 PM
despite the "fusion never" funding level we've been at for decades

eh, as much quibbling as fusion researchers are doing to round Q to >1 I'm not confident

how do aerospace engineers put it - Mars has just enough atmosphere that you have to plan for it and address reentry heat but not enough to provide any meaningful deceleration for a probe

the reporting on the NIF fusion 'breakthrough' is abysmal. The Q factor they're claiming is thermal, at the back of the process, and none of it was - or could be - converted to useful ends. While relevant for improving theoretical understanding of deuterium/tritium fusion, it doesn't mean we're suddenly 5-10 years from practical commercial fusion. Because that actual Q factor was almost certainly <0.01 accounting for all the inefficiencies in the laser pumps and other apparatus. (edited)

Thank you for sharing that. I don't know enough about the subject and it's hard to put into perspective what they are talking about.
Avatar
Backend Qplasma has been the near-exclusive figure quoted in fusion research for decades. It's an important scientific metric for sure and getting that value >1 has to happen. But Qtotal is the metric that ultimately matters and avoiding mention of that value has been a long-running problem in the field of fusion research as well as reporting on the subject.
