Hi yall just to let you know we have our own discord sever of our own at https://discord.gg/YCkBmGj
Invite to join a server
Avatar
@aceat64 ... I can't speak to the specific reason for this specific discord but I would imagine that some people don't like other people and want to be able to set the rules and tone and cannot do it on Talk or here.
Avatar
We can setup permissions for moderation on a per-channel basis though, I'm a big fan of simplification of communication channels
1:53 AM
Fragmentation decreases the ability to communicate effectively

Avatar
What I suggest then is to make that information avaliable to people. One reason that I think people go with something outside is for its equality in ownership. What I mean is that Discord doesn't have a dog in the hunt when it comes to DMS. Facebook groups do not either. But the admins of this server and Talk do. (edited)
1:58 AM
I think people feel that there is a fairness that they can get from having their own server or group outside of DMS, that they couldn't get inside
2:04 AM
But I am with you on the fragmentation... I wish there was a good solution to having independent areas that are on;y moderated and managed by those that create it.
2:04 AM
but under the same thing
2:04 AM
People could easily find and subscribe to the groups they want or create new ones for projects (edited)
2:05 AM
The easiest for most people is create a facebook group or discord server ... they make it simple to do rather than asking permission

Let's take it to #general_chatter

Why have one method of communication when we can fragment into a thousand so no new members know which end is up. πŸ‘‡

Reminds of the days working in a t-shirt shop making concert tees. The promoters used to go in advance a couple of weeks and had most shirts made locally. I often got to wear one on the morning of the concert and everyone asked how the hell I did that. Also used to make the shirts for Fletcher's Corny Dogs. Skip Fletcher was too cheap for an extra screen so we have to hand paint in the tongue. (edited)
Avatar
Hey all, I want to participate in the t shirt committee class but we want yo have a contest for best logo.

With the effective exit of the two main teachers in Printmaking - Who else around the space can teach some of these classes? Just looking for brainstorming ideas. It's my understanding that the supplies are fairly well stocked there.

Astrud and Paul havent β€œexited” to my knowledge, but are taking the rest of the summer off. I think the long term plan is to do one month on, one month off. I dunno if any of the serger fiends she has created will pick up that torch for Sewing, but When I talked to Astrud last week, she said that Mushashi is gearing up to take over teaching the silk screen classes. Rose is qualified to teach a few things, but hasn’t worked up the courage to leave the nest just yet. Stephenie will probably take on some of the laser/woodblock classes at some point, but her attention is focused on the finance committee and Nicks senior year of high school at the moment.

Thats not bad
Avatar
Considering Astrud has been teaching an average of 2+ classes a week for most of a year, I don't think it's unreasonable to take a month or two off as a mental break

Especially since she's ramping up into a new job that started three weeks ago.

Yeah, we have regiggered the T-shirt and totes class to generate a dozen(ish) batch of shirts & totes for PR each time we do it, and will be doing the same for the micro registration multicolor screen printing class

the archlogist in me is pondering if they always have lived on deciduous trees or was that an adaptation? Maybe they started to do the longer periods to survive doing ice ages that only lasted 13-16 years which would hint at there being a flora compointent to match

there's even wasps and fungi that have adapted to be natural predators to them so.. something is there

FYI- the electrical work is scheduled to start on or about Thursday n the Flex area, and take 2-3 weeks to complete. The Expansion team has requested that all of the worktables in the middle of the space be vacated and kept that way until the work is complete. With workers up and down ladders above the dropped ceiling, they don’t want to risk having projects or personal property damaged in the process. I would also suggest making sure that printmaking projects are not left out in the committee area anywhere near the south warehouse wall, since the committee is getting several outlets installed there.

@judy Kriehn @Hardsuit where are the rules posted regarding ink and dye that aren't allowed?
Avatar
That's probably the issue, it's a "known" thing by regulars, and is taught in classes to access equipment, but not posted
3:58 PM
If they bring in everything including their own press, then they won't be aware
Avatar
hon1nbo (k/j/t) exsilium 6/29/2020 3:58 PM
well they're using the sink, and it is labelled on the bottle with the aquatic notice.
3:59 PM
having it posted though is going to be important
Avatar
So I'm still not following why it's prohibited
4:10 PM
Can someone help me understand?
4:14 PM
The stuff cleans up with mineral spirits
Avatar
It's on the label of the ink that it's hazardous to aquatic life
4:23 PM
You DO NOT flush that stuff down any sink, drain, etc
Avatar
eh
4:24 PM
thats not how sewers work man (edited)
4:24 PM
and you wouldn't be dumping it down the drain
4:24 PM
you'd be adding soap first....
4:24 PM
this is industry standard stuff
4:24 PM
why the fuss
4:25 PM
everything oil based is "harmful to aquatic life"....
Avatar
We stopped using mineral spirits at least two years ago
4:26 PM
It's on the label!!!
Avatar
i'm not hearing a why, i'm hearing "its scary" and "its bad"
Avatar
You don't put it down the drain, period!
Avatar
ok, so how do you dispose of it then?
4:26 PM
after usage
Avatar
Wipe it off with paper towels and put in fireproof trash can It's also highly flammable. Which is ALSO on the label
Avatar
so is tons of shit at dms
Avatar
I'll admit we don't have it visibly posted, which we will fix ASAP.
Avatar
So here's where i sit, you need to put on the wiki a set of rules voted by the committee
4:29 PM
not what used to be
Avatar
But it's been committee policy and actively taught in classes for years that we don't do non water based inks
Avatar
There is no committee policy
4:30 PM
tribal knowledge isn't policy
Avatar
Dude, not your committee
Avatar
dude
4:32 PM
your not either
4:32 PM
you don't get to say yea verily that something is or isn't
4:32 PM
i'm over people acting as if they get the say when its committee based
4:33 PM
put a set of rules together and vote on them
4:33 PM
then you can tout that its the will of the committee
4:33 PM
until then
4:33 PM
you have no standing for banning anyone or regulating it
4:33 PM
"because its committee policy"
4:33 PM
oh and by the way
4:34 PM

Did we screw up in not posting it? Yes

YOU HAVE NO DOCUMENTATION

4:37 PM
You don't get to make up the rules as you go along
4:37 PM
Post it or don't
4:37 PM
but don't expect anyone to back your whining if you don't have a rule set
Avatar
This isn't making it up as I go along
4:49 PM
Yes, it's not documented
4:49 PM
But that doesn't mean it hasn't been in use for YEARS
4:49 PM
And now that we realize we fucked it up, we'll fix the documents
Avatar
So think about it logically. How do you expect anyone to adhere to a policy that isn't published
Avatar
But I'm not making shit up on the spur of the moment
4:50 PM
Did I ask for punishment?
Avatar
Does it matter?
4:50 PM
You make the claim someone is breaking the rules or policy
4:50 PM
said policy doesn't exist
4:50 PM
it's not as if you haven't been a member for years
4:51 PM
you know this group just as well as I
4:51 PM
As it's been said multiple times, if its not on the wiki, it doesn't exist
4:51 PM
This goes doubly for new members
Avatar
hon1nbo (k/j/t) exsilium 6/29/2020 4:51 PM
I mean it's taught in the training; even I knew that just casually observing them. We also aren't expected to make rules for things that can't go down drains anyway
Avatar
There is nothing that says it can't go down the drain
4:52 PM
That is some made up crap
4:52 PM
Go talk to a print shop
4:52 PM
How do you think they wash the screens off?
Avatar
It says do on the goddamn ink bottle
4:52 PM
Is this your shit?
Avatar
Why would I bring ink to the space and leave it?
4:53 PM
I'm tired of seeing this behavior, I'm speaking against it
4:53 PM
Undocumented rules and made up assumptions because things are "scary" or "toxic"
Avatar

Avatar
ferricyanide 6/29/2020 4:55 PM
