Committees / ceramics
Monthly Ceramics Committee Meetings are held the first Tuesday of the month from 6:30-8:00 p.m.
Avatar
Still looking for the chair of this committee to join discord. Or maybe a second in command.
Avatar
I will mention this to Beth, I am on the committee for it
Avatar
Does anyone know when a next introduction class will be?
Avatar
I noticed the white board and it was a lil out of date. So the next hand building class will be Sunday 6/11 @ 2:00pm?? I just wanted to be sure.
Avatar
They usually post them on the whiteboard outside the area. They don't use discord much
Avatar
Ok thank you. Who, and how, should I contant if I have any other questions?
Avatar
Beth Bannister, @dryad2b on Talk. I usually contact her on Facebook. There's a Fired Arts Facebook group
Avatar
Ok thank you!
Avatar
Hi people! I'm new so please excuse the... noobish question... is there a masonry bit or something to cut a hole in a pot? I found a pot I might want for my indoor garden, but I had no drainage 😐
Avatar
David Kessinger 10/17/2017 1:48 PM
How big? If you catch me here I have some diamond holes saw bits.
Avatar
What is the extent of the fired arts? I understand ceramics are a big part of it, i was looking into getting a lampworking setup for glass, a torch and glass rods, working surface, tools ect, would this be something that would relate or no?
11:22 AM
Ill be asking around in person next week when im at the space but just wanted to get the ball rolling now
Avatar
They do lots of glass too but no blowing
Avatar
oh cool, ill check that stuff out, thanks!
Avatar
john a gorman 12/24/2017 9:48 PM
@mjp they do have equipment and even some glass rod for lampwork. It's in a large rolling took chest. You do need to bring in your own gas. Amanda is working on a class for lampwork
Avatar
oh wow thats awesome! thanks ill try and connect with her
10:06 PM
ill buy some Map-Pro Gas as well this week
Avatar
john a gorman 12/24/2017 10:07 PM
Amanda is @Lady Sandry
Avatar
Hiya :) we have tools in a box near the ceramics area. There might be some map-pro left, but in the future I was told fuel would be provided for classes but that personal use would need to be brought and taken away each time.
10:11 PM
I'm not sure if its been decided how to handle glass rods. For now we have some donated rods. I would expect it would just be a bring your own. Not sure if the donated rods we have will only be for class or not in the future
Avatar
i bought a starter set, so i have glass rods, mandrels and a torch head ect (edited)
10:14 PM
just wondering who to talk to, to start doing it and maybe get in on some classes
10:14 PM
ive been taking glassblowing classes past few weeks but totally new to lampworking
10:15 PM
ill get my own Map Pro Gas as well
Avatar
I think classes likely won't happen until the rearrangement of the fired arts area is complete. It's hard to have enough safe space for 3-5 people to have their own set ups
10:18 PM
cmcooper0 would know better though (edited)
Avatar
cool, i am very interested in starting
10:22 PM
If I'm up and practicing soon I'll message you. I'm pretty new to lampwork as well, but I should be able to get you started at least

12:23 AM
id like to try and get comfy with setting up a workspace sometime this month
12:23 AM
i have my own torch head as well
12:24 AM
ill try and print out a layout of what im trying to do, if anyone else wants to go by it or extend it
12:24 AM
as far as workspace layout and procedure

Fyi Brenda was reelected 8-4. A couple of votes came in later. Did not affect the outcome
Avatar
Can't find the results on Talk, just the meeting announcement https://talk.dallasmakerspace.org/t/committee-meeting-11-6-19-wed-6-30pm-chair-election/64627
Remember – tomorrow 11/6 at 6:30 is the Ceramics Committee meeting. We will be electing the chair. It would be nice to know what else is on the agenda, but so far the agenda hasn’t been posted anywhere. Brenda Villafuerte and Beth Appleton are running for Committee Chair.

Hey team ceramics, 3D Fab has a member interested in sintering some 3D-printed metal parts. He'd like to use a bronze-infused filament that sinters at 871°C (1600°F). Do we have a kiln that'll support that temp? If so, would it be possible to arrange a specialty firing? Here's a link to the material: https://shop.thevirtualfoundry.com/collections/metal-filaments/products/bronze-filamet?variant=12351189483603 I think we can upgrade one of our Prusa printers to support the metal-infused filament (a hardened steel nozzle and a filament warmer are all that's required), but I wanted to check to make sure we could actually sinter it first.
3D Metal Printing using Bronze Filametβ„’ and an unmodified desktop printer. Our materials enable any FFF/FDM 3D printer to produce pure metal parts and objects. Once fired in a kiln, the result is 100% pure metal.
Avatar
Looks like a variation on Metal Clay
Avatar
@Evan Lott - thought about using a microwave kiln? They hit about 1600, which is the sintering temp for that stuff and you can get cheap ones on amazon.
Avatar
Ooh, that's a really interesting idea @Skyspook

not trying to discourage the sharing of such opportunities, but meanwhile, Col. Dan is dropping some off @ DMS that are very likely dumpster-bound... https://talk.dallasmakerspace.org/t/molds-for-slip-pouring/93317/12
The current plan is to drop them all off with @dryad2b Beth. Probably around 6:30PM or so. She will definitely have them after 7PM. If you all make any of them please do post them to Talk.
