Thermal pads are different... they aren't adhesive. MC only carries the pads, thermal compound, or thermal adhesive 2-part epoxy mix.

It sounds like you need a conversion from momentary switch behavior to latching behavior.

Figure 2 sounds like what you are wanting to do where the Power Input net and the Switched Power net are the GPIO lines that you wish to short together. (edited)

Yes. I'm using ipv4 on raspbian. Currently I'm using project Byzantium to get a base working, but it doesn't give me as many options as I need. If you are here now I'm in the common area to talk more if needed.

I got Ultra Violet & Side emitting LEDs coming for the Mouser sign. I think UV would look the cleanest. But having a colorful Bluetooth one where anyone could scan the bar code and play with different light configs on their phone would be fun also. Harbor Freight sells some of what I'll call midsize panels, but I think they're 12V. Maybe a camping store, but you're likely to pay out the nose for them as they'll be productized.

So on the nine dollar trinket board, it has 3 of the pins of the actual chip able to be used for capacitive touch . One of those is also the direct memory access pin for driving the neopixels.

I have an Arduino Uno with a relay shield. I connected the positive of an extension cord in series with the relay contacts on the board and everything works fine when I'm plugged into the computer. As soon as I remove the USB, and connect it to a 5v power supply (board standard), the relays won't fire. The LEDs for the relays fire...but the relays themselves don't fire...any ideas?

I believe the relay board needs its own power. The 5v from a USB won't be enough to power it

@Deleted User you should be good just using a USB cable and power adapter. USB is 5v. You really should not need a lot of amps for the relays. They are just magnetic switches.

Where'd you get the relay board? This really depends on where the board gets its power from (Arduino provides 5v, 3.3v, and 'Vin' pins on its headers)

HACKED!: CRT TV becomes a crude Oscilloscope

It's pretty easy to do that may mod, and most CRTs have good isolation of the HV from what you'd want to mess with. Since the tubes are typically replaceable, they are commonly using Spade connectors. You can pull one pair and if it is the vertical scan done, otherwise replace spades and grab the other pair These units are fun, but unless you make a new driver for the X sweep you are limited in what you can do with it.

Crts are pretty easy to be careful with. There's one real big wire that attaches to the tube and transformer to watch out for

When I was 13 i switched the horizontal and vertical deflection guns so I could watch the tv in a mirror.

there's the big wire, but also the caps on the driver board for the flyback. Those can operate at intermediate voltages and be a little nasty

Yeah, it's KiCad, I jumped over from eagle about a year after Autodesk went subscription based. It's got it's quirks but it works fine for the simple stuff I do.

This is a not yet finished 5v power supply, 90-245Vac in. The goal here is 3A continuous output with as small a quiesscent power draw as possible. Hopefully under 0.1W at 240v.

Yeah that's a power mosfet so it's really designed for a 10v Vgs. Any gate voltage below about 4v and you won't fully turn it on, which makes the design much more complicated.

If I'm looking for a logic level fet I'll usually pull up the datasheet and look at the Rds(on) parameter. Not the value, but the test conditions. They spec Rds(on) at the Vgs they intend for you to run.

yeah, I watched the Digikey video series on KiCad, and when sourcing parts (obviously on Digikey), he just sorted by what they had the most stock of, and his reasoning was they stock what sells...hehe

how fast can someone to open and close the switch? if you incentivize them with money?

The inductor and capacitor naturally oscillate so once the switch is opened the foot would convulse a few times at their natural frequency and eventually dissipate all the energy and stop.

Opened up an extra remote and repurposing it for home automation usage. Original power was 3v coin cell but tolerates 3.3v just fine. Seen people run them on 5v as well from Arduinos. Sending it serial commands to "press" the buttons right now, but eventually will be REST calls making it open garage, workshop, and gate.

I need help selecting an amp for my new passive speakers. The speakers say the amplifier power should be 10-150 watts. I did some research and an internet guy said you should get 1.5X the wattage for each channel. But he also said to ignore the maximum wattage. So Should I get 15 watts per channel or 225? This time the bickering was long enough I actually started a layout. Toying with using some scrap IGBT modules as a load bank.

I have kind of a stupid electronics question: can you buy small pre-made electromagnets? Basically a small piece of ferrous metal wrapped in "magnet wire". I have an idea for something I want to try out, but I might not want to hand wrap LOTS of them myself. I've read about some people trying to use inductors for such a job, but having a hard time telling if that really works. It's also a seemingly hard thing to Google successfully or find on Mouser. Technically this could be called a solenoid I THINK, but most of those results include the moving actuator type piece.

generally a hollow form with a sprung ferrous mass that pulls the mass into it against the spring with the actuator itself being pulled in or pushed out depending on orientation

@ESmith Ah, "plunger" is a better term. The weird part seems to be TECHNICALLY a solenoid doesn't have to include that plunger but all the practical searches for that word include it. I think I need very little force, but a lot of them. I'm thinking about using them to push away a permanent magnet for a "pen up" operation on a polar bot type plotter (like Brandon's Gocupi back in the day). @Skyspook I'll look around for "holding magnets" and that seems to be a better search term, but the combination of size and prize might scare me off. I don't think need them to be as strong as most offerings etc. and might just have to wind my own (which would be a lot of them if they seem like they'd work).

Ideally, I want it to be physically contact free. Most people do the "pen up" with a servo for instance (and a solenoid could also be used here), but that servo "scratches" previous dry erase work while it moves around (even if it has a very small contact point). Would be cool to push it away by ramping up electromagnets (not really levitating, just pushing away from the mostly vertical board) and then bring it back down by ramping electromagnets back down. This also means no power wires running to the stylus (or batteries) for a solenoid/servo. Not sure of the practicality overall, but I want to try an array of these magnets for this job.

It is searchable, and more importantly filterable. You could for instance, filter to relays, and then sort high to low by quantity, and if you wanted to filter by AC or DC and then search by max V or A you could.

The library as far as I understand, sets up UART with 100,000 baud, I don't know if it assumes the signal is inverted, that's easy enough to do with a transistor but I still don't know how this library works

Given it's using the UART library, and I don't see any inverting of bits going on, I'd say that all of the voltages are going to be non-inverted. There is an invert parameter you can pass to the init function, I believe that should invert the logic for you

Utility installed new transformers in my neighborhood and I find the ratings on them confusing - 75KVA and 50KVA. In my mind that's basically 75kW and 50kW respectively, which seems awfully small when the 150A panel in my house can theoretically draw 36kW and each transformer serves something like 5-8 structures.

Odds are those few houses really are limited to 50kVA continuous. They probably looked at what loads those houses had been using in the past, along with some knowledge of what an average house uses, and decided 50kVA was fine. There's likely some wiggle room for overloads like maybe 1 hour at 55 or 60kVA.

Yeah, probably. It's mostly a heat thing, so the thermal mass of the all the steel in the transformer gives it some overload capability.

How many are you looking at? There are some USB pads that can interact with some software that I've used in the past, but most of them aren't very good - especially if you want like an automatic way to increment IDs or pull from a DB or something.

Might want to make sure it's actually 12awg and really copper - lots of fake wiring out there unfortunately

You'll get a more accurate check of drop in the wires by measuring the voltage across the wire itself, in the mV setting. I usually wouldn't trust the last digit of a meter. If 6W is too much loss for you then yeah go bigger but as long the insulation isn't getting soft and you don't smell it you shouldn't have major issues. There's also no harm going bigger.

There is a ESR meter in the eLab if you want super low resistance readings.

Does your BMS have low voltage cutoff? Given that you are using LiPo I'd assume so but just checking because we nearly burned down a lab because the battery plant didn't have low voltage cutoff. The power supplies are basically constant power output so as the battery voltage drops the input current goes up (toward infinity). The battery plant melted all the insulation off the 2/0 wires we used as the battery voltage dipped toward zero.

If you don't know what's wrong... It's fairly impractical. There are so many components that could be wrong with it I thought it would be really really difficult to just kind of check everything. If you have an idea on what the issue might be, or if you're aware of some well-known problems like capacitors failing or something.... Those might be easier to actually fix yourself. But unless you have like schematics and a lot of resources... And also have a working board preferably... And better yet a actual PCIe test station or something.... It would be difficult

Most of the time I thought they stacked two cr2016 to get 6v instead of 3v, no need for a boost circuit.

Hello all, I have a question. I’m a novice when it comes to electronic, but I’m about to tackle making an led sign. I’ll be wiring in several different LED strips, I’m trying to determine is there an advantage/ disadvanted to wirining them in parallel vs serial? If I can, I’d like to avoid having to solder both sides of the LED. Any advice would help me a lot. Thank you

The determination on wether to use serial, parallel or serial/parallel is what is the source voltage you want to drive your LED sign from. The forward voltage drop of most high efficiency LEDs is 2.2 volts. So if your using 12 volts (actually 13.8V) from a car, so it is pretty simple to put 5-6 LEDs in series. (you said LED sign, so I'm assuming individual control... if they are all the same color this may not apply)... For individually addressable LED strips the power is normally paralleled. Stable power is important. Small installations can have a single power connection but for anything larger I normally splice in power every few feet to keep it robust. Control signals go into 1 end of each strip of lights... and can come out the other end to daisy chain to the next strip (or you can start a new chain from your controller if that's easier)

It's a chem mix IIRC. They also were a little under voltage. Modern pre activated chems can have a shelf like of 15 years if you get the industrial and critical load versions.

I've visited once and was amazed, planning to sign up soon! I have a Gaggia Classic Pro that I want to install a PID mod for, and ideally play with Gagguino. My electronics skills are a bit rusty, I'd love some help in exchange for helping in any software / cybersecurity projects you may have!
