Still looking for the chair of this committee to join discord. Or maybe a second in command.
[5/3/2017 3:32 PM] limeytx
I doubt John will join discord. He barely uses talk
[5/3/2017 3:36 PM] canibalcrab
Or hangouts
[5/3/2017 3:37 PM] canibalcrab
Maybe he can get someone who's more active to hop on as a liaison for blacksmithing
[5/3/2017 3:38 PM] limeytx
Sarah, or best chance might be Mitch McDaniel, his sub chair
[5/3/2017 3:46 PM] .ladyl
Mitch M would be your best bet. He's the vice chair, and who usually the one who responds to things on TALK.
[5/3/2017 9:07 PM] themitch22
There can only be one Mitch I decree
[5/3/2017 11:31 PM] axeonos
Mitch fight. I got money on @themitch22 hes small but scrappy

Strength of materials aside, which would take longer, 3d printing a full broadsword, or smithing one?
[5/4/2017 9:00 AM] limeytx
3d printing would take longer, if you had an efficient furnace
[5/4/2017 9:01 AM] limeytx
Besides, real broadsword vs plastic? Lol

[2/6/2018 1:38 AM] canibalcrab
@Limey (MReynolds) id take that challenge to make a full sized broadsword. 3dprinted vs smithed
[2/14/2018 1:46 PM] limeytx
Lol pearce, that would be cool fun
[2/16/2018 5:55 PM] ethan033996
@pearce should be able to now, I'll also try to be better about watch discord

Hey, I'm pretty new to the whole DMS thing and I've wanted to get into metal working for a while so I was wondering what I'd have to do to really get going? Is there like a class I have to take? And what would be some beginners projects you guys can recommend?
[2/20/2018 6:11 PM] talkers
@felixsalo Sunday from 10-2pm is open forge. That would be a great intro to what you want to learn.
@Ethan can add more details

[8/10/2019 3:55 PM] brsims2406
I don't know of anywhere local (though I'm sure there is someplace). I read over in general chatter that you don't like Amazon, so I'd suggest either Midwest knifemakers supply or Texas knifemakers supply. Both have pretty good online stores.

Hello all, I have a knife making question, and thought this might be the place to ask. Where can I but pins like brass pin to mechanically secure my knife handle?
[1/13/2020 3:01 PM] canibalcrab
Generally you'd want two of them minimum about 2 inches apart
[1/13/2020 3:01 PM] dgorilla016069
Oops
[1/13/2020 3:01 PM] dgorilla016069
Sorry, Where can I buy pins like brass pin to mechanically secure my knife handle?
[1/13/2020 3:06 PM] canibalcrab
Locally, you can get them at woodworld with some other knife making supplies, but a bit expensive. You can also find brass pins for knife making on Amazon
[1/13/2020 3:08 PM] dgorilla016069
Oh that is a great idea
[1/13/2020 3:10 PM] canibalcrab
You can get some cool mosaic tile ones online too. If you join knife making groups on Facebook lots of people make and trade supplies like custom pins

No problem, I solved it. I just barely made it to Texas Farrier Supply in Kennendale and found a used $275, 65-lb Texan. My first anvil! Also picked up a hammer and tongs while I was there, so Im officially ready to start learning! James is a wonderful guy and he chatted with me for a while about the craft and the North Texas blacksmithing community. He was very knowledgeable and welcoming and he got me set up and good to go.

Coal forge vs Propane forge a look at the pros and cons
There have been several questions about forge styles. Is gas better than coal? or is a coal forge better than a propane forge? In the long run there are many factors to consider and your personal situation will dictate which forge is best for you. In this video I hope to pr...

[8/1/2020 9:32 PM] doug.emes
coal is old school, and "turning it off" isnt really a thing
[8/1/2020 9:32 PM] doug.emes
for that reason alone, go propane
[8/1/2020 10:28 PM] aesthetys
Okay, I might be able to afford that in a few months or so. In the meantime, I return to my original question: with mad enough campfire skills, the right kind of wood, and maybe some charcoal, is it possible to bring steel to temperature in a campfire or bonfire?
[8/1/2020 10:28 PM] canibalcrab
I doubt it based on how I've seen coal forges work, but maybe?
[8/1/2020 10:29 PM] canibalcrab

[8/1/2020 10:29 PM] aesthetys
K
[8/1/2020 10:30 PM] aesthetys
There are wood-fired forges on the market, so the answer may be yes.
[8/1/2020 10:32 PM] doug.emes
you have to have forced air... yes you can do it... but dont let your enthusiasm be a recipe for disaster. for every successfull flame tornado video on youtube, theres so many more serious 3rd degree burn victims
[8/1/2020 11:05 PM] nullinterface
wonder if there have been adaptations of pellet stoves for such applications
[8/1/2020 11:19 PM] brsims2406
@ESmith not that I know of, presumably because forcing temperatures are gonna eat some serious pellets at a pretty crazy rate.
[8/1/2020 11:20 PM] nullinterface
just seems like a possible alternative to coal and propane
[8/1/2020 11:21 PM] brsims2406
@Aesthetys wood fired forging is possible, but not advisable long term. As Doug said, your gonna need forced air and as I said just above this, forced air and forging temperatures are gonna go through wood very quickly- requiring a lot of fuel.
[8/1/2020 11:22 PM] brsims2406
@ESmith the problem is maintaining temp, and coal is cheap.
[8/1/2020 11:23 PM] nullinterface
more energy dense than wood, even pellets, for sure
[8/1/2020 11:55 PM] yashsedai
if you have a good source of wood scraps wood makes sense, otherwise, coal is ok if you have a place to store it, otherwise, propane may be your best option
[8/1/2020 11:55 PM] yashsedai
if you are just starting, coal will force you to learn fire control
[8/1/2020 11:55 PM] yashsedai
propane is consistent usually
[8/1/2020 11:56 PM] nullinterface
given that ~20lb of pellets can heat an entire house for several hours I'm a bit surprised that no one has adapted them for forge usage, however there might be issues with their burn temperature vs coal
[8/2/2020 12:19 AM] aesthetys
Well, some research tells me about a wood called Osage-Orange, which produces 32.9 million BTU's per cord. Place in Kansas sells a truckload for a hundred bucks.
[8/2/2020 12:20 AM] aesthetys
Apparently the hottest-burning firewood in the US.
[8/2/2020 12:27 AM] aesthetys
I don't think I have anywhere near my house I can build a fire, though, come to think of it, and it would probably melt anything I put it in. I should probably just practice my hammering on clay and be patient until I can buy a propane forge or get certified for the induction forge.
[8/2/2020 12:28 AM] aesthetys
Speaking of which, I noticed there are no certification classes on the schedule. Is it by appointment for now?
[8/2/2020 12:30 AM] nullinterface
COVID-19 rules have put some crimp on instruction
[8/2/2020 7:04 AM] doug.emes
@qydra, osage-orange is the same tree as bodark/hedge-apple/horseapple/crabapple depending on what you were told to call it growing up. super dense wood, doesnt like to rot, used to be used by early pioneers to build piers for homes. also good for bows.
[8/8/2020 2:58 AM] aesthetys
@doug.emes Is that the tree with the green, brain-textured apples about the size of baseballs?
[8/8/2020 10:11 AM] andrew5152
yes. Maclura Pomifera aka horseapples, osage oranges, hedgeapples, etc.

TOOLS EXPLAINED
DRILL PRESS : A tall upright machine useful for suddenly snatching flat metal bar stock out of your hands so that it smacks you in the chest and flings your beer across the room, denting the freshly-painted project which you had carefully set in the corner where nothing could get to it.
WIRE WHEEL : Cleans paint off bolts and then throws them somewhere under the workbench with the speed of light. Also removes fingerprints and hard-earned calluses from fingers in about the time it takes you to say, 'Oh sh*t'
DROP SAW : A portable cutting tool used to make studs too short.
PLIERS : Used to round off bolt heads. Sometimes used in the creation of blood-blisters.
BELT SANDER : An electric sanding tool commonly used to convert minor touch-up jobs into major refinishing jobs.
HACKSAW : One of a family of cutting tools built on the Ouija board principle... It transforms human energy into a crooked, unpredictable motion, and the more you attempt to influence its course, the more dismal your future becomes.
VISE-GRIPS : Generally used after pliers to completely round off bolt heads. If nothing else is available, they can also be used to transfer intense welding heat to the palm of your hand.
OXYACETYLENE TORCH : Used almost entirely for lighting on fire various flammable objects in your shop. Also handy for igniting the grease inside the wheel hub out of which you want to remove a bearing race..
TABLE SAW : A large stationary power tool commonly used to launch wood projectiles for testing wall integrity.
HYDRAULIC FLOOR JACK : Used for lowering an automobile to the ground after you have installed your new brake shoes, trapping the jack handle firmly under the bumper.
BAND SAW : A large stationary power saw primarily used by most shops to cut good aluminum sheet into smaller pieces that more easily fit into the trash can after you cut on the inside of the line instead of the outside edge.
[11/25/2020 1:19 PM] engpin1964
TWO-TON ENGINE HOIST : A tool for testing the maximum tensile strength of everything you forgot to disconnect.
PHILLIPS SCREWDRIVER : Normally used to stab the vacuum seals under lids or for opening old-style paper-and-tin oil cans and splashing oil on your shirt; but can also be used, as the name implies, to strip out Phillips screw heads.
STRAIGHT SCREWDRIVER : A tool for opening paint cans. Sometimes used to convert common slotted screws into non-removable screws and butchering your palms.
PRY BAR : A tool used to crumple the metal surrounding that clip or bracket you needed to remove in order to replace a 50 cent part.
HOSE CUTTER : A tool used to make hoses too short.
HAMMER : Originally employed as a weapon of war, the hammer nowadays is used as a kind of divining rod to locate the most expensive parts adjacent the object we are trying to hit.
UTILITY KNIFE : Used to open and slice through the contents of cardboard cartons delivered to your front door; works particularly well on contents such as seats, vinyl records, liquids in plastic bottles, collector magazines, refund checks, and rubber or plastic parts. Especially useful for slicing work clothes, but only while in use.
ADJUSTABLE WRENCH: aka "Another hammer", aka "the Swedish Nut Lathe", aka "Crescent Wrench". Commonly used as a one size fits all wrench, usually results in rounding off nut heads before the use of pliers. Will randomly adjust size between bolts, resulting in busted buckles, curse words, and multiple threats to any inanimate objects within the immediate vicinity.
Son of a bitch TOOL : Any handy tool that you grab and throw across the garage while yelling 'Son of a b*tch' at the top of your lungs. It is also, most often, the next tool that you will need.

How do I identify what kind of scrap metal is safe to melt down and reforge? I have this material from the base of a big Christmas tree. I think the X part is steel, and Im not sure what the pot is made of. Im slightly concerned that the nuts welded onto the side of the pot may be galvanized and not play well in the forge.

What makes this Anvil so special?
We resurface a 100 year old Kohlswa anvil. Will Stelter and I discovered a neat trick by bouncing a ball bearing to observe how dense the steel of the anvil is. Then we compared our anvils to see which one was bigger and better! This is a big anvil.

Mount slag big as usual for aluminium can stock (plastic liner and paint). There's more aluminium in it then I'd like. I need to melt more brass
[12/26/2022 1:36 PM] themitch22
Aluminum casting looks like fun. You just don't want moisture I know
[12/26/2022 1:36 PM] themitch22
It would be nice if it's good enough to machine
[12/26/2022 1:36 PM] themitch22
I'd imagine it's pourous and brittle for machining
[12/26/2022 9:38 PM] hon1nbo
I'm gonna find out eventually. I expect poor machining but who knows
[12/26/2022 11:24 PM] hardsuit
You can improve the properties of the cast by using known quality aluminum ( not just random melted down scrap), and there are chemicals you can add to help degass or otherwise promote more consistent casting
[12/26/2022 11:26 PM] hardsuit
A lot of the casting that I have seen done here in the past was using aluminum cans or extrusions of one type or another, which typically are alloys that aren't ideal for casting
[12/26/2022 11:26 PM] hardsuit
Works fine to practice with or for non structural pieces
[12/26/2022 11:30 PM] hardsuit
Quick Google search pops up the 300 series alloys for better casting properties
[12/27/2022 2:18 PM] hon1nbo
The point of the can aluminium is just fun, decorative and doing something with the large volume of cans consumed in my home
[12/27/2022 2:19 PM] hon1nbo
Addition of Borax typically helps in terms of flow; bigger issue is first need to cast stock, then cast for pouring. Too many impurities to scrape out first melt.
[12/27/2022 2:20 PM] hon1nbo
For structural casting I'm actually looking at casting silicon bronze to make brazable attachments to metalworking projects
